At the age of 14 A young Calvin Banks was given his first set of turntables, and since then has been building his record collection. You name it he got it. With his vast amount of records he was given the name Rec Shop (Short for record shop). He slowly built his reputation as a DJ and has played in clubs such as The Savoy, Uptown Comedy Club, Lu Lu’s, and countless others.After years of mixing records, Calvin entered the field of production. His influences include his mentors DJ Soloflex and CD Scratch. Also legends such as DJ Premier and Jazzy Jeff. In 1991 he joined a hip-hop group called Insite. By 1992 the group released a single called “Prominent Black Style†which was produced by Rec Shop. The record was aired on WBLS by DJs Kid Capri and Silver D. Since then Rec Shop has been working hands on with many artists, producing tracks to take them to the next level.
