I am here for Friends

About Me

Sweet, sometimes shy guy, always up for a laugh, sarcastic humor and profound discussions about philosophy, history, literature...anything controversial, unusual or interesting. I've been living in Istanbul, Turkey for the past three and a half years; taking the last few courses to finish my degree and get certified to teach. This will go on forever I think. :P Love Istanbul but not the cultural isolation I sometimes feel. Still working hopelessly to learn Turkish. :P Like to meet friends locally or internationally. As long as you have something to talk about and aren't cooler than God I'm sure we'll get along. ;) for pics go to:http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/teachinggypsy/my_photos

My Interests

History, philosophy, writing, politics, travel, amateur (very) photography, music, astrology...appreciation for anything artistic or imaginative.

I'd like to meet:

Friends

Music:

Anything from Bach to the Buzzcocks...been on a Joy Division kick lately, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, The Killers, Dido, The Cranberries...partial to New Wave (Depeche Mode, The Smiths, etc.)...occasionally rip out to Marilyn Manson and Tool. Also LOVE Tori Amos, pity she's taken. :P Kinda stay away from pretentious indie types though..lol

Movies:

I have SERIOUS multiple personality disorder here. Great Expectations, Saw (Hitchcock does a slasher film) The English Patient, love dark German cinema, sometimes Pedro Almodovar if I'm in the mood...and LOVE the Farelly Brothers...all their stuff is biographical for me! :D Crash, Requiem for a Dream, Memento, loved Danny the Dog :D 21 grams...it's sort of pointless to endlessly list films, isn't it?

Television:

Don't really like watching television when I'm in the States, but here I'm addicted to what little good television there is. I watch Desperate Housewives (hot 30-something women, woohoo!), the OC (to give you a sense of my emotional maturity), Without a Trace, old X Files and ER reruns....helllp! Okay, I'm starved to listen to native English speakers. :)

Books:

Read a lot of history and politics for the major in college I'm finishing; really like that stuff. Most recent novel I read was the Da Vinci Code. Like short stories (Alice Munro, Raymond Carver, etc.) hmmm...Snow Falling on Cedars, The English Patient, The Dream of Scipio, The Things They Carried by Tim O' Brien, A Many Splendored Thing, A Passage to India, Straight Man, The Iliad, Democracy in America, The Mulberry Empire...

Heroes:

Gandhi, Albert Schweitzer, the Dalai Lama, Chez Guevara, the French Resistance, anyone who has stood up to the Bush Administration...

Sting, Rodin, Fatih University and Depeche Mode

So this is truly beginning to look like a fallow field, this blog of mine.  It so keenly reeks of neglect, don't you think?  Since last bothering with it I've gone to see Sting, visited a pe...

A Dangerous and Exciting Country

Friends and family will ask me often if I ever feel threatened here in Turkey, since it is such a "dangerous" country and I'm an American in a land chock full of Muslims (a.k.a. terrorists).  I r...
