My name isn't really Rexi, that's my amending name. I am a traveller spending a year in Sydney. About 4 months ago I bought an Ex Libris guide and fell in love with all its little nuances. exlibriscityguides.comI started noticing the faults of other travel guides like Lonely Planet and Timeout and Frommers. They're heavy and very bulky. The information the give can be outdated. It got me thinking whether i could correct the wrong infomration in those guides for fun. The first time I did it was at the YHA in Sydney. I borrowed a Sydney guide out and photocopied a random page and corrected all the wrong bits. I then placed it in the guide. I didn't think much of it until one night i overheard a conversation between these 3 girls and how they found the page i corrected and found that amusing.
It probably started when i bought my Ex Libris guide. These guides are so interactive- you can re-arrange pages in te order you used them in, the maps are pretty inventive and the best part is that it gives the user empty pages to write a journal of their travels around sydney! That way, it ceases to be a guide and transforms into a journal of your travels!
Gee, I've amused someone. It prompted me into doing it to other pages and guides in the YHA. I got more daring and did it to new guides in bookshops as well. I've also corrected information in my beloved Ex Libris guide. I've actually photocopied pages of my own Journal and placed them in Ex Libris guides.
I thought this never hurt anyone and there's a strange thrill in getting your opinion out there, just waiting for someone to pick up on it.
As you might imagine, I've spent a substantial amount of my holiday doing this, and i've even compiled a little booklet outlining the various bookshops i've "amended" in. it's titled "An Investigation of Bookshops, Newsagencies and other assorted environments".
I think i'm still the only one doing this, but i hope that other people have picked up on it.
