imikimi - Customize Your World My own family was affected by the Trujillo dictatorship. My uncle, Delmiro Barba, was imprisoned for helping the plotters over throw the Trujillo's regime. My Grandfather was also involved in the movement against Trujillo. My mother and her sisters fought in the civil rights movement and was able to escape from the dictatorship to the United States and some other part of the country. Some were lucky. But unlike the 3 Mirabal sisters, they were not so lucky, they ended up being victims, giving their lives. When you are the lucky one, you feel a kind of responsibility to bear witness, to tell the story. As I became more and more involved in the research, of my people I realized I was more interested in characters than just a story.I felt the need to portray and give voice to these three Dominican women who fought for our freedom, and whose murder on 25 November 1961 has become a symbol for the International Struggle for the elimination of violence against women. Our freedom and history is carried on the backs of so many invisible women! Even women who were not in politics per se were the mothers and sisters of future politicians, informing their vision, participating behind the scenes in their struggles. Anonymously, they did important work. Now, our women leaders tend to be in the public eye. But back then, that leadership was like many freedom movements 'underground', behind the scenes, but nonetheless extremely important and ultimately liberating.“The Unforgettable Butterflies,"These three women from a little country have become international symbols of the struggle against dictatorship and oppression. They are an example for Dominican people and for women all over the world. They made a huge sacrifice, losing their lives to guarantee our freedom for JUSTICE, TRUTH, FREEDOM AND EQUAL RIGHTS..
