The Ethiopian Library & Information Foundation for Education (eLIFE) is a California based 501(c)(3)* non-profit, volunteer organization of Ethiopians and Friends of Ethiopia that seeks to promote the development of literate, self-confident, and productive citizens through the provision of free and publicly accessed learning centers as a place Ethiopians turn to for the discovery of ideas, the joy of reading and the power of information. By coordinating the development of public libraries throughout Ethiopia and by empowering every citizen with free access to information, eLIFE strives to be a catalyst for 100 % literacy in Ethiopia.Imagine a peasant farmer who scratches a living out of a few unyielding hectares while yearning to learn how to read and write so he can improve his lot. Imagine young boys and girls highly motivated to learn and excel but have no access to books. Imagine a whole society, which has no place to turn to in order to quench its thirst for knowledge and information. We at eLIFE believe we can help bridge the education gap and push back the boundaries of ignorance as well as give the Ethiopian People a chance of controlling their own destiny by making available books in freely accessible public learning centers throughout Ethiopia.
