MARK OF THE BEATS

About Me

These days, one does not matter unless they can prove themselves a commodity. One is nothing if they don't appeal to a target demographic. We're flying under the radar. Talent, even steady grinding, does not ensure financial stability. If so, why are there benefit shows for J Dilla (RIP) and Tempt? I do this because I want to share whatever I'm capable of creating, so I can leave this world with something when I'm gone. Look through music profiles and it becomes painfully obvious how many people are putting their hearts and souls into their art and still aren't recognized. I know there are many out there, those who want to create because they can, and if we can get paid for doing it, even better. Never let anyone think for you. Support art! PUT YOUR BIO SECTION HERE! Changes may take up to 2 mins to show on your profile

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: It's just me, myself and I... and an Akai MPC1000, Ableton Live 5, Reason 3, a Korg MicroKontrol, M-Audio Ozone, two Numark turntables, a Numark DM1002MKII mixer, an Epiphone Les Paul, an acoustic guitar, a Mac iBook G4, a gang of plug-ins and your grandma's vinyl collection.
Influences: Everything influences me. Musically, Portishead, Massive Attack, Jazzanova, 4Hero, J Dilla, 9th Wonder, James Brown (of course), Prince, Stevie Wonder, El-P, Brook D'Leau, SA-RA, RZA, Prince Paul, Goldie, Dillinja, Pendulum (their engineer should be paid in straight Platinum), Fatjack, the Beatminerz, the Ummah, the Soulquarians, the Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Depeche Mode, Jobim, Gilberto, D.I.T.C., Pete Rock, Skinny Puppy, David Bowie, Debussy, Mozart, Opeth, the Queens of the Stone Age, Vicotnik of DHG, Snorre of Thorns, the list could go on forever. I would be hard pressed to pick one person, or group, that is my "favorite" or my "hero".

Edgar Allen Poe, HP Lovecraft, Saul Williams, William Blake, Socrates (via Plato), Plato, Sophocles, Sartre, Arthur Rimbaud, Charles Baudelaire, Lord Byron, Oscar Wilde, Philip K. Dick, Chuck Pahluhniuk, Neil Gaiman... I won't go on because this list will be even more obscure, as people do not read. People probably aren't even reading this.

My single greatest artistic influence is my uncle, who is more like a brother, Vyal One. After him, everyone from the first accidental artists in the caves of Lascaux, to the rennaissance geniuses in Michaelangelo and Leornardo, to the absinthe drenched works of the Victorian era, primarily Aubrey Beardsley, to Alfonse Mucha, til we finally get to some recognizable names in Blade, Booze, T-Kid, Cope 2, Seen, Case, Skeme (an American Hero), Dez (Kayslay), Doze, Rammellzee (genius) , Os Gemeos, Twist, Scar, Ces, Daim, Mode 2, Man, Sacred, Mear, and the ever lovely Jade. I could write a novel on the influence of art on music, and vice versa. I believe art inspires life, as much as life inspires art.

Vocalists such as Ogre of Skinny Puppy, Jack Davey, Sade, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Billie Holiday, Minnie Riperton, Norman Connors, James Brown, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode, Jacob Bannon of Converge, Chino Moreno of Deftones, Beth Gibbons of Portishead, Ibrahim Ferrer, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Johnny Cash, Dwele, Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd and my mother, among MANY others, are all influences.

MCs such as Rakim, Grandmaster Caz, Nas, KRS One, J Dilla (the G. O. A. T.) Skibadee, Rammellzee, Q Tip, Phife, Ras Kass, Abstract Rude, Aceyalone, the Pharcyde, Al Tariq, MF Doom, the GZA, Phonte, Fearless, Common, Big L, Saul Williams, Ursula Rucker, Aesop Rock, El-P (mentioned twice, can't front), Vast Aire, Cage, Cannibal Ox, Eyedea, Pos & Trugoy, Jean Grae, Bahamadia, Jeru, Camp Lo... I could write this list forever as well.

Oddly, people I can't stand also seem to inspire me, because they demonstrate such a lack of substance that it encourages me to create something different. Among this list, which would dwarf my other lists in comparison, is pretty much everything on tv and the radio, save for those few jazz and soul stations. Support college radio!
Sounds Like: According to others: J Dilla, Pete Rock, Daft Punk, El-P, Prince, Dillinja, J*Davey, 9th Wonder, Timbaland, Madlib, Kanye West, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and the list keeps growing...
