Dan Hewson is a British jazz pianist and trombonist, based in Lisbon and London.
He works with a number of bands, on two different instruments and in two different countries... in the UK with Charlotte Glasson Band, Stomp's Lost and Found Orchestra, Ruthie Culver, Lizzie Newberry, Lawrence Jones. In Portugal with Olissipo Electrico, Ciro Cruz, Tora Tora Big Band, Johannes Kreiger, Lars Arens. He has worked with many great jazz musicians, including Bobby Wellins, Mornington Lockett, Heidi Vogel, Gene Calderazzo, Ricardo dos Santos, Julian Seigal, Carlos Barretto, Bernado Moreira and Paula Oliveira.
His compositions and arrangements feature on two Groove Armada albums, a Madonna single and the Tomb Raider soundtrack. With the Lost and Found Orchestra has has been playing hose-pipe, marimba, alarm clock and bed bass in the Sydney Opera House and the South Bank Centre!

DAN HEWSON QUARTET
Originally formed in London, their debut album, "A Day in Cadiz", was recorded live in the famous Vortex club in Stoke Newington, London. After relocating to Lisbon, the band was reformed with a fantastic line-up featuring Bruno Margalho on alto saxophone, Massimo Cavalli on double bass and Alexandre Alves on drums, along with Dan on piano and trombone (not at the same time...)
The style is a mixture of driving, modern jazz, Brazilian rhythms and classical textures. A strong and lyrical saxophone converses with a very open rhythm section. Sometimes the piano is replaced by a trombone, creating a two-horn sound evoking the Ornette Coleman / Don Cherry quartet. The compositions move from simple open grooves for collective improvisation into complex written-out sections; imagine a fusion of John Taylor, Chick Corea and Hermeto Pascoal....
