About Me

.. A man trying to stay sane in an insane world. A dabbler in the arts. A lover of spicy and exotic foods. Someone who'd like to leave society with something when he's gone other than a beautiful corpse.

Lately people at work have been saying I look like a gangster. Or the assistant to a Vegas casino manager. Or a narcotraficante. I promise not to break your fingers or bust your kneecaps.
I cannot dance like this, but in a better tomorrow we all will:

My Interests

Reading, photography, writing, movies, sports, things with chilies, sushi, caffeine, fun with tequila and beer and other social lubricants, music of many flavors, finding unusual/forgotten parts of my twin cities, history, travel, art deco, noir, cooking, baking, hiking, biking, finding a scheme to leave me financially independent

I'd like to meet:

The dating angle: An intelligent, cute, caring, complex, liberal/centrist/don't-care-about-crazy-political-shenanigan s type who can hold a conversation. Someone who shares an interest or two with me. Someone to inspire me to great art. Someone who shakes me up and turns me on to new things. Someone to wander NYC or JC with. I'm open. Surprise me. But bonus points if you like going to the occasional baseball game or Film Forum movie, are the creative type, are tattooed or have a nose piercing.

The friend angle: Um, interesting/fun people to hang with/talk with/laugh with/watch movies with/dine with/drink with/destroy the world with.
I am undecided on puppets with booty.

Music:

And One, Antibalas, Cinematic Orchestra, Cubanate, Fela Kuti, Front 242, Goldfrapp, Hate Dept., Jaga Jazzist, KMFDM, Mr. Scruff, Nitzer Ebb, Only Living Witness, Portishead, Darren Price, Sasha & Digweed, Spahn Ranch, Amon Tobin, Tool. For slightly outdated starters. I have a lot of music--grunge, metal, industrial, techno, blues, trip hop, Afrobeat (in rough musical history order)--and once DJed on my college radio station. Lately I like Electric Six, Mylo, Von Iva, She Wants Revenge, The Presets, Slaraffenland, Vive La Fete, Mstrkrft, The Knife, White Rose Movement, Ratatat, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Justice, TEPR and others. Anything French and dirty disco-ish. For more on my latest crushes, go to www.last.fm/user/jersey_citizen .

Movies:

Chinatown, Gattaca, The Third Man, Citizen Kane, Hard Boiled, The Wild Bunch, The 39 Steps, Trainspotting, Mean Streets, My Man Godfrey, The Lady Eve, The Limey, Chungking Express, Bound, Strangers on a Train, Wings of Desire, Point Blank, Infernal Affairs

Television:

Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, the Office, the late but not forgotten Andy Richter and Arrested Development. Sunday (and Monday) football in the fall, and baseball in the summer. Go Dolphins and Mets! The World Cup every four years.

Books:

things by Irvine Welsh, Lorrie Moore, Thom Jones, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Ross MacDonald, Raymond Carver, Chuck Palahniuk, Philip K. Dick, Michael Chabon, Graham Greene, Paul Auster, Carl Hiaasen. In greater detail: Johnny Got His Gun, The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Ubik, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Trainspotting. In less detail: noir; books with awe-inspiring photos; poetry; any page-turning, well-crafted read.

Heroes:

André Kertész, Edward Weston, Philip K. Dick (for being a trippy visionary, not for the paranoia), Chow Yun-Fat, Steve Buscemi. All those big-idea people before me, like the dudes who said, "Hey, let's ferment this agave and see what happens" or whoever found out how to make lambic beer. Genius. Everyone fighting the good anti-W fight.

My Blog

Last weekend (more TK)

So on Sunday I did what's become my usual bike ride. I just can't pass up that ride down along the Hudson, especially in warm weather, when the sun is reflecting off the river. And riding along next t...

Oh, what a brutal week

Just got back from work a little while ago. Goodbye, workout plans. Hello, rum and cachaca. All for a publication no one reads. Well, I hope someone does. But hey, it's Friday now! Woo! And I go on vac...

More Brooklyn

That's what today was, with more of the Hudson Greenway, too. Yep, I went biking, and since I didn't have a strong sense of where I wanted to go, I just chose my favorite spots again. Colder today, bu...

Weekends

I'm slacking here. I apologize to my, uh, regular readers. So last weekend (as in back in September) I went to New Brunswick and then Philly. There was alcohol and cheesesteaks and the Phillies failin...

Look!

I designed a century, give or take a couple of miles. Now all I have to do is try it. Starts out heading from JC up to the GWB, then back down along the Hudson, which is really nice. From there, thing...

This weekend

Friday night was so-so Italian and discussion of a possible holiday trip to Mexico (the Yucatan? Ixtapa? Puerto Vallarta? A wild card?). There was booze. On the way home I passed a DeLorean with "Quik...

Biking again

Oof. Do not do this if you don't like hills. The first part is OK, but that piece across Rockland County is brutal. And, as luck would have it, that's when my knee (the one I fell hard on a few weeks ...

I made it!

This, plus the 1-mile loop to the Path in JC, was the easy part of yesterday. 121+ miles! Woo!So how do I explain it? Imagine getting up before 4, doing a thrice-over on your bike to make sure everyth...

The world needs more three-day weekends

We should just can Monday for good and add it to the weekend, shouldn't we? I mean, I had fun with my three days off, and now I'm dreading the upcoming week, where I'm gonna have to squish all my work...

To all those running while carrying beer...

...don't do it. Not a good idea. I stumbled/went flying while trying to make a train last night, my four Smithwick's flew out of my hand and ended up a foamy, splintery mess on the asphalt (OK, some d...
