Lo Fi Rock A Country. That’s what Superstar 73 calls their music. But there’s more to it, as vocalist/bassist DON MOORE explains. “We were at a bar one night and somebody asked us if we were in a band. We said yeah, but it was one of those times when things weren’t going so well, and we didn’t want to talk to anyone. So when this person asked what kind of music we play Joey spoke up and said 'Heavy Redneck Shit.' They didn’t like that answer but we did. And that’s how Superstar 73 was born.”
At the time, Don Moore, Ricky Sanders and Joey Garriga were touring with their band Wobble, a post punk power pop trio. The band opened for the likes of Green Day and 311 before they went their separate ways. A few years later, Don’s brother, ARCHER MOORE , began writing the second book in his Apopka Trilogy, What’s a Boy To Do. “In my novel the main character joins a garage band," Archer explains. "Making music helps him deal with all the things that are wrong in his life. So I started writing lyrics for this fictional band in the novel. Every song is about an experience my character has throughout the course of the book. I only write about love and loss, because to me, that’s all there is. When my brother read them the first thing he thought of was Heavy Redneck Shit.”
Don immediately wrote “Chance of a Lifetime” a wall of NASCAR noise with guitars tuned down so low you fear the strings will fall off with every riff. But as most of Archer’s lyrics are more melancholy than angry, the sound quickly morphed into the acoustic country flavored rock that dominates the record. Songs like the nostalgic “Harney Pond Canal” long for the days when the fish are all keepers and they bite all day long. Like the Old 97’s and the Refreshments before them, Superstar 73 forges new ground in the Americana genre that enjoys a cult following despite being ignored by mainstream radio.
Soon, what started out as passages from a novel became a full fledged album as Don reunited with his old Wobble bandmates. Ricky Sanders had been touring the festival circuit, performing with several major label acts while writing his own songs for TWO HEADS MUSIC , the film and TV music company he co-owns with Chris McLernon. Their work has appeared on such shows as The Apprentice, The OC and Law and Order. Joey Garriga had been a member of MCA recording artists Crush Down, as well as Dave Scott's project The Nocturnals. "When we hit the studio," says Ricky, "it was just like back in the Wobble days. But we had this new energy and direction with Archer’s lyrics. We had eleven songs down in a week.”
What’s a Boy To Do, the debut CD from Superstar 73 is a folk inspired country rock record that invokes images of the band sitting on a stool strumming their moody tales of woe. Then, just when you think you’ve got them all figured out, they hit you with the Heavy Redneck Shit. Are they the future of rock and roll or the past of the Moore brothers and Wobble? Only time will tell.
