Janese Jones-Matthews and Shikena Jones comprise the soul-stirring duo of Malachi.Both Janese and Shikena have been singing for as long as they can remember. They grew up in the same church home and sang in the junior choir together.While the two were yet “tweens” they, along with three other youths from their church formed an A cappella group by the name of Harmony. Harmony was a vocally strong group that received many accolades from local ministries and talent shows.In 1995, their efforts to remain a young, five-girl group were halted. While the other girls grew up and decided that they wanted other things in life, Janese and Shikena knew that they just wanted to sing. Thus, Malachi was formed. “Messengers of God” are what these women truly aspire to be.Malachi’s signature melodic harmonies have been matured by an infusion of jazz riffs and meticulously crafted vocal acrobatics. The result is the birth of a sound that can only be described as “funk-gospel fused with jazz” a sound that is oh so uniquely Malachi.
