If you combined Minnie Ripperton’s range, Tina Turner’s class, passion,
and fire, and Beyonce’s moves and sex appeal you’d have Ashanti J’Aria.
This pint sized five-octive powerhouse is one of Queens finest born and
raised. She’s the product of an African dancer mother and a world re-noun bassist (Barry Johnson currently with Chic). J’Aria is also the niece of
Reginald Veljohnson (Family Matters/Die Hard).
Carrying on the family legacy, Ashanti J’Aria studied voice dance and
theatre and would eventually earn scholarships from the NAACP as well as
the Lena Horn scholarship competition. Later she would go on to receive an NAACP award for ‘best cast’ in the World Premiere of ‘Da Kink In My Hair’.
Other Career high Lights include working on and off Broadway, singing the national anthem at Madison Square Garden, winning over audiences at the world famous Apollo, and making it to the Hollywood round of American Idol twice. (final 45 out of 10,000 and final 80 of 100000). Ashanti was also cast in National commercials and voiceovers.
Among her favorite influences are Prince, Aretha Franklin and Mariah
Carey, and Sheryl Crow. Well versed in most genres her sights are set on
story driven, passion infused alternative rock. J’Aria is a true triple
threat who considers performing the ultimate act of expression as well as
her strongest suit.
