The Dionysia residency programme launched as THE most exciting art event of the summer 2007. It consisted of works in progress, video documentation, props and objects plus live performances. The outcome of the 10 days prior.

..
WHAT:
Dionysia is a unique residency taking place in small villages in the Icelandic countryside. Artists and scholars of all genres are given the opportunity to work together across genre boundaries and with the local talents.
WHERE:
In 2007 we were in Hafnir, Grundarfjordur, Bolungarvik, Djupavik a Strondum, Siglufjordur, Hofsos, Borgarfjordur eystri and Stodvarfjordur. This year we were in Borgarfjordur eystri and Hofsos again and also new places Vogar and Dalvik/Svarfadardalur.
WHEN:
10 days from the 9th to the 19th of 2007 and 10 days from 21st to the 30th of May 2008. Next year we are planning to keep the dates 21st to the 30th of May.
WHY:
We want to break down boundaries that have been created in our minds between:
City and countryside, different art genres, the scholarly and the art world, the art world and the rest of the world. We are looking for interesting experiences that inspire, push and that can grow.
WHO:
Last year 37 artists from music, visual art, design and performance art participated but also young people from the scholarly world. THIS YEAR around 27 individuals took part. It is a nice mix of professionals and people still finishing their degrees from all genres of the arts.

Dionysia is a platform that gives unique access where you take responsibility in your designated location to take initiative in mobilizing people to collaborate and work with you on projects.
INTERESTED YET? Artists will be working on projects and hosting art happenings in obscure places in the countryside of Iceland in conjunction with the indigenous in each place. This project is all about breaking down boundaries of all sorts; boundaries between city and countryside, between different genres and worlds, an those that dwell within, and first and foremost we aim to explore new sides of ourselves, seeing how far we can stretch our artistic abilities to new directions!
The curators of the DIONYSIA project hope to gain new audience to our artists’ works as well as get to know the Icelandic countryside in a different way than the normal tourist would. We have selected a few locations in the countryside with it in mind to go out of the usual tourist route in Iceland. Each place is chosen for its beauty, history or value of interest in some way.
The participating artists are divided into groups of five to seven people who dwell in their project town. The groups are mixed in such a way that there will hopefully be representatives for a wide selection of fields and genres of art (visual, acoustic, design, theatre...). They will collaborate with each other and the local people to make some kind of an art project based on what the situation, the town and surroundings have to offer. We would like to leave each location with a sense of having contributed something to the town and the locals, and hopefully vice-versa.
The project is designed and organized by visual artist/filmmaker Hulda Ros Gudnadottir aka. Spiderspoon. This year fashion designer Arna Sigrun Haraldsdottir, visual artist Eva Ãsleifsdóttir and singer Solbjorg Bjornsdottir made up an organizational committee. Dionysia is planning to publish a book with visual and text material from the residencies in collaboration with ReykjavikurAkademian - a community of scholars (www.akademia.is), the research department of Icelandic Academy of the Arts (www.lhi.is) and Nyhil publishing house.
Participants in the DIONYSIA project will be required to be open-minded, bold, brave, curious, enthusiastic and prepared to do something new and exciting!
We remind you that DIONYSIA is a low-funded grassroot phenomenon and we don't have the staff to assist participants with VISA applications. We send you a letter of invitation and the rest is up to you.
Any comments, suggestions, ideas or questions are very welcome.
