Patrick BootheFrom the age of seven I began singing in the youth choir at my church, I had a proud father, who enjoyed listening to me sing every Sunday. He would encourage me to sing solo to him at home almost everyday. Eventually an opportunity for me to sing a song on an live gospel album that was being recorded at the Westminster Central Hall in London, I was twelve then, and over the moon.
By the age of thirteen and fourteen, I was already able to play the guitar, bass, drums and piano, then at fifteen I recorded my first gospel solo album paid for, by yours truly! My dad.
I was soon singing in gospel concerts and big conventions up and down the country, where it was commonly known to gather crowds of three thousand and more people, it was an exciting moment in my life, and I had the greatest mentor at my side all the way, my father.
After I left college at eighteen, I went to work for the Westminster Bank, in bond st. London.
But after two years I left and joined my first band “Midnite Expressâ€, and just after six months of being with them, we were signed to GTO Records.
We were soon supporting acts like Ronnie Laws and Marvin Gaye, and headlined a few ourselves. After a while I left to pursue a sole career, I took some demos to Red Bus Records and was pleasantly surprised when they decided to sign me. After a year of not doing anything I was approached by their promotions manager, Morgan Khan, who was leaving to start a new label called Street wave records, distributed by CBS Epic.My first single was 'Dance all night', which did very well in the dance charts, and then 'Never knew love like this before', which did a lot more for me in the US.
Even though the album was already completed before single 2 was released in the states, the rift between label and distributer, was as such that, the album never saw the light of day.
As a champion of the word faith, I never lost sight of my goals, I immediately booked a flight to Los Angeles to work on some new songs with Raymond Calhoun, a member of the Gap Band.
After six months I returned to London, and it was about that time I met the late great Isaac Hayes, who had decided to live in London, and we became good friends.By the late 80's I was very active on the session scene, doing backing vocals on records like 'When the going gets tough' by Billy Ocean, Woman in chains and Sowing the seeds of love by Tears for fears, Lloyd Cole, Climie Fisher, Richard Derbyshire, sang with Clive Griffin when he supported Eric Clapton, backing vocals for Michael Bolton, tour managed Errol Brown, Spitting Image, Cilla Black & Barry Manalowe, Kyle Minogue, Jason Donovan, Blue Mercedes, Jazzy Jeff, Ruby Turner, Cadbury's Fruit and nut commercial and others, too many to mention. It was on one of these sessions that I Mike Francis in Rome, singing on his album. We became friends from that very first meeting until this day. It was after he had chosen a couple of my songs to sing on his album, he decided we should record an album, with me as the artist.
We did two songs first, and Ricardo Clary at BMG Rome, took them to America and gave them to Clive Davis MD at Arista Records NY; we had a deal, Italy was to be home that year.
