About Me

The whole thing started around 1989, I was a teenager then and started playing guitar with a friend. We wrote some songs together, gathered a few more friends and set up a band. The story lasted about two years, then another band, another story.
We played together from 1991 until 1998, built up a set of pretty good songs and shared great moments. I must confess some of our songs sounded quite good, to the extent that some bands we shared stages with asked me to give them some of my songs. But I was not ready to do so.
In 2000, I joined the band my former drummer and guitarist had created. No composition only covers, I joined as a guitarist. I was still writing on my own though. That was quite an experience playing with a sax and trumpet too ! Then, a couple of years later, they asked me to play some of my songs and our singer, listening to my music, one song after another, asked me if it didn’t bother me having all these pieces of music filling my drawers. Then I knew I was ready, ready to lend or give my songs to other people. I had yet to get more confident, learn a few more things, experiment. And then, here I am… just a tiny little sample of what I do, I’ll modify the list of songs regularly.
1 – Perfumes (G. Gennaro-Presse) 7:12
“Perfumes” is a long and crescendo acoustic song. The acoustic guitar and the low voice are backed by an upright bass and a cello while the piano drops notes here and there, gradually bringing the melody to a climactic ending.
2 – Whispers (G. Gennaro-Presse) 4:43
That’s another example of fully instrumental songs I’m writing at present. Much more orientated towards TV or movies than records, it is a pretty good sample of my present work. Worth listening until the end. Sorry for the quality of the sound of the violin but I can’t afford Steinberg’s Halion String Edition (yet :D).
3 – Sentimental Intercourse (G. Gennaro-Presse) 4:06
Another instrumental title, it starts off quite slowly but grows darker and more powerful in the second half. I used a lot of strings (contrabass, cello and violins) a music box and some piano and organs together with a “more usual” drums/bass guitar set. Gets really good for the last minute and a half or so.
4 – Ton Visage (G. Gennaro-Presse) 2 :56
2001, this was intended as a thank as much as a love song. Simple, short, crescendo. Then something jumped out of it and bred that version, a new song actually. Slow, low, with piano, cello and violin.
5 – As far as I’m concerned (G. Gennaro-Presse) 4:10
I love that one. The music sounds happy whereas the lyrics are very sarcastic. The result is, to my mind, a contrasting song which owes much to my early influences such as Paul Heaton (Housemartins, The Beautiful South, Cracker Boy).
6 - Home (G. Gennaro-Presse)
You can listen to an all acoustic version and the demo version with vocals on Claire Mareuil’s myspace music page . “Home” was written in 2002, originally as an acoustic song. Experimenting led me to exercise on that song for piano. And I ended up with a pretty long song, not acoustic at all, even though lyrics were short. Today, there’s also a completely instrumental version for strings.
Mina’s Lament

Mina’s Lament (G. Gennaro-Presse)
You can listen to it on Claire Mareuil’s myspace music page . “Mina’s Lament” is the sequel of a song which was originally written in 1995, “Mina, oh ! my…” Using the same melody as a basis it grew into something different, of his own. Claire Mareuil was handy in helping to tune the vocals.
SHOOT A BULLET by GGP
..
Shoot a bullet through my head (G. Gennaro-Presse)
You can listen to it on Claire Mareuil’s myspace music page . “Shoot…” is the song that had been picked up by my former band. Even though some years have elapsed since it was written, I still use it on my current demo because I think it is able to show another aspect of my skills.
And please, feel free to comment !

Featuring Claire Mareuil on "Mina's Lament" & "Perfumes"

There used to be some, but I turned away from bands, not for any particular reasons. Time had come for me to experience new kinds of writing, on my own.

I can't say I don't miss playing with friends, rehearsing, performing every once in a while, but well, that's the way it is.

Influences: Under the...

Jazz, Breton folk music when I was a kid, British pop as a teenager, esp. Housemartins, Beautiful South, Wonderstuff or the Smiths, then a lot more spanning from jazz to hard rock, acoustic to nearly symphonic.

Woops ! Always the difficult question.
At the moment I'm into writing instrumental pieces more than songs which means I do not sing or play guitar much on these new pieces. So...
