Originally from Switzerland, Dominique Schafer spend a number of years in Los Angeles before coming to Boston. His main focus stays on writing classical music for the concert stage, though electronic music has gained importance in his work over the last few years.
As part of the Fromm residency Italian flutist Mario Caroli premiered last May a new work for bass flute and 8 channel electronics. Other performances over recent times include a piece for the Arditti string quartet, a new piece for ensemble riot, and Ensemble Fa. His music has been performed in the US and Europe among others by the Dinosaur Annex Ensemble, Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), Frances Uitti (cello solo piece played with two bows), Alarm will Sound, the Callithumpian Consort, Orchestre National de Lorraine (France), E-Mex ensemble (Germany), and the California EAR Unit. The duo Triplex Unity for Saxophone and Percussion has recently been recorded by the Yesaroun’ Duo for CD release. He is currently working on a cycle for large orchestra.
His composition teachers include Paul Reale, Mario Davidovsky, Brian Ferneyhough, Chaya Czernowin, Magnus Lindberg, Helmut Lachenmann and Julian Anderson. Studies in electronic music with Hans Tutschku.
