Icon Underground has positioned itself as the pinnacle of a fresh and long-awaited take on the electronic genre. The high BPM oriented style of David Alexander fuses with the rock-energy vocals of Christopher Wight to form a digital realm of excitingly chaotic music that has already begun to take hold of the modern dance scene. With Christopher’s flows paralleling the like of Zack de la Rocha and David’s electronica baring a heart-pounding club feel, the songs of Icon Underground are like a blending of Nine Inch Nails, Andre 3000, and Rage Against the Machine—a unique and exhilarating hybrid to say the least. They have created a sound with versatility so flexible that even fans of the hip-hop and rap scenes are swayed by Icon’s seductive aural power. Their sound is refreshingly original, shockingly powerful, but most of all… inspiring.
In 2004, neither Alexander nor Wight knew that the few songs they had laid down on a whim would blossom into what Icon has become. Like any music worth listening to, Icon Underground’s sound was organically grown rather than forced. After hearing the quality of their original product, both knew that what started as a side-project had legitimate potential to excel in the music world, and it has. Since their beginning, Icon has established itself as a forerunner in the underground club arena and has staked a claim on a stage presence unseen before. Performing with such artists as DJ Irene and George Clinton, Icon delivers an energy to the audience that is of the highest level. With upbeat powerful tracks like “Diagnosis” and “Plastik Perfection,” it makes sense that a crowd like the 4,000 at a recent Spundae performance goes wild for Icon’s sound. The life inspired lyricism is invigorating and the instrumental is undoubtedly an electrifying part of Icon Underground’s overall ambience.
Aside from Icon’s personal musical success, both in their recorded product and live performances, around 2005 Wight and Alexander started “Icon Collective” a new Electronic Music Production School, a truly unique institution created “By artists 4 artists.” Focusing more on educating independent artists and producers in modern creative musical production, Icon Collective hosts a faculty of numerous musicians including DJ Rap, Morgan Page, The Speaker Junkies, and Icon Underground themselves. “It’s an artistic environment where technology blends with creativity” and in this day and age, new artists need an environment like Icon Collective.
Icon Underground represents a much needed shift in the contemporary music sphere, a digital revolution for a generation marred by the repetitious nature of the modern record industry. On the verge of releasing their first full-length album “Different Dream,” Icon is growing and evolving with every live performance and quickly becoming a larger influence on the underground scene. Wight himself exclaims that as far as Icon Underground goes, “Only the tip of the iceberg has been shown.”
