About Me

»-(¯`v´¯)-» Design your MySpace with MyLook «-(¯`v´¯)-«[Bio created for the Corduroy Kid's album promo:]CORDUROY KID BIO Corduroy Kid - real name Shawn Hall was born into a Peace Corps family. As a child his parents’ many international friends exposed him to a wide variety of global rhythms. Before he his 1st birthday, his family relocated from Cukfield England to Parkdale in Toronto. His musical career began at age six in the Howard Public Park Junior Choir, under renowned Mrs. Ashworth-Gam. In grade four, he played Jaws on the cello and was hooked. Ten years of classical training followed, including five years in the best high school orchestra in Ontario, Oakwood Collegiate Institute. This high school has recently been acknowledged by Sook-Yin Lee of CBC radio as a key training ground to Canada’s contemporary music scene; alumni include members of Stars, Broken Social Scene, Memphis, Metric and singer Jully Black. It wasn’t until he was twelve, and his grandmother gave him a copy of “How to play Harmonica for the Musical Idiot” that he began a journey into rhythm and blues. By the time he was in high school Shawn was co-fronting a popular blues/funk band called Tied To The Tracks. The band had a good run of [*] years, but eventually fell apart and Shawn worked a brief stint at CityTV before moving to Vancouver in 2001 to resume his life of music. In 2003, Shawn began working on his first independent solo album “The Sleep Project”, under his alias Corduroy Kid. The album was released in 2005 and charted in the top 200 most played records on Canadian college radio [link here to reviews?]. Corduroy Kid’s music has since been licensed to Godiva’s (TV show), Fairmont International and Fashion Cares Toronto. Shawn has also made guest appearances as a vocalist and instrumentalist on several albums including Ben Rogers and the Insignificant Others, Jimmy Zee, and Raffi. In 2006, after he teamed up with Langston Raymond, a trumpet player he met through vocalist Bianca Carli (Subtle Etiquette founder). Apollo 5 was briefly created through this collaboration and an EP was produced [link here]. It was the following project though, that would take Corduroy to the next level; Doc Ramone and Corduroy Kid present: Dirty Bottom. The album has been described as Toots and the Maytals meets James Brown at a barbeque in Vancouver. The Dirty Bottom band has already toured the album three times in Western Canada with good results.Shawn has also partnered up with long-time collaborator Matt Rogers (Ben Rogers and the Insignificant Others) with a return to his folk/blues roots in a duo called The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer, and a release of “The Blues Can Kill”. This duo has been well received in the smaller venues around Vancouver and has been asked to open for local blues musician T-Nile.Shawn has recently finished a tour in the studio doing an all-Corduroy Kid soundtrack for his film mate Alex Lavigne and trials rider Ryan Leech’s latest film “Crux”, due out November 2007.
