I am Creative, Generous, Misunderstood, OPEN minded, good sense of humour
Griographer, Artistic Director, Performer, student of the multiverseNot a believer in your job making you who you are, although as an artist your work is so much a part of you. No clocking off at the end of the day.I am the Artistic Director of Dance-Theatre company,Kompany Malakhi, which I started back in 1994 out of a desire to fuse commercial and artistic art forms and dance styles in performance, and to develop an education programme that ensures the nurturing of the artists and audiences of tomorrow.I have a passion for story telling in performance by creating imaginative and inspiring narratives that often hold a message. I'd call myself ‘Griographer’ to best describe my style of dance theatre.‘Griot’ = an Afrikan storyteller/social commentator, and ‘grapher’ from choreographer= someone who creates dance and movement. My vernacular and formal training in dance-theatre influences my work it can be sophisticated, raw, sensitive, sassy but always peppered with the play, invention and physical theatre. The physicality and human observation captured in the works Charlie Chaplin and the flavours of alternative humour of Tim Burton, also influences my work. It is presented through progressive devising techniques and informed by classical conventions. The work draws on a host of techniques and styles that are European, Afrikan, Cuban, Afrikan-American creating what I call Nowrikan. The styles enable me to create a unique language, fusing my passion for the energy of Hip Hop, with the intricacy of Jazz, the grounding of Afrikan dance and the physicality of martial arts. Physical theatre is an important element of the work so the movement creates emotion and narrative and not movement for movements’ sake or shapes in space. As the last poets say, 'For a cause not just because' There are infinite possibilities. My company/solo work has been described as 'One of the most innovative and exciting dance theatre companies in the UK today, I draw on a wealth of styles/forms such as physical theatre, Funkstyles, Hip Hop Culture as well as contemporary dance, Jazz Fuzion and Capoeira. These styles are effortlessly synthesised with spoken word and film to create a totally unique experience and performance styleI've got over 15 years of teaching experience working with professionals and people with little or no experience in dance or physical theatre.Looking forward to linking with like minded individuals
