In his teenage years Valerian was an early-nineties goth with long hair, leatherjacket and a favour for newmodelarmy, poetry, abandoned warehouses and the glossy guitar licks by U2s The Edge.
He played drums in an indie band and was a full-range percussionist in different latin samba bands..which is no fucking contradiction by the way*;-)*
Getting in touch with ragga and jungle at the Notting Hill Carnival 1993 while visiting London in summertime, a whole new musical world opened to the blackforest born.
Soon records of the NinjaTune label, darkside drumandbass by Ed Rush and digital hardcore by Berlin based DHR label piled up in Valerians student home.
First gigs took him round southern Germany and California.
In 2000 he founded BASSLASTIC in Konstanz/Germany with his dj-mate MELLOKAT, what became soon one of the most stable running and praised drumandbass-parties in southern Germany, featuring guest-djs from the US, UK, Norway and Switzerland as well as Germanys dnb-elite and the local newcomer scene.
BASSLASTIC always experimented with genre-crossing guest vocalists and VJs and found ways to book artists aside purely commercial reasons.
In 2003/2004/2005/2006 the BASSLASTIC and Valerian+Mellokat got voted into the topten of german drumandbass clubnights and djs by the online mag Future Music.
As a founding member of the media art/party-collective DATABABES, Valerian became one of the first djs/promoters to set up and host a monthly party fully dedicated to nu-skool breaks: "Treibgut" and "Datababes presents" ran for more than 3 years and featured guest appearances of most of Germanys and Switzerlands breaks-scene representants such as Boogie Army, Chrashouse Brothers, Creaminal, SmashFX, Wiesel, Bengston, Downpressor etc.
Moving from Konstanz to Cologne in 2004 meant leaving the bodensee scene but BASSLASTIC continues after a 10 months break in 2007 to rock into its 7th year of existence in 2008.
