How can you become labeled as a punk? Sometimes all that it takes is a Mohawk haircut. Assuming people are associated with certain subcultures by judging their hair style is not politically correct, but stereotypes and labels do exist.
Question: What makes metalcore different than metal?
Answer: Tight clothing, brutal breakdowns, and short hair with applied product.
Thus was born fashioncore!
Fashioncore: Metalcore bands and their respective fans who take their appearance just as seriously (if not more) than the music they create/listen to.
Nevertheless, music and style will always compliment and influence each other. So it might not be too much of a surprise to discover that the 2005 Vans Warped Tour personnel includes for the first time ever an official tour hair stylist.
Eliza is a 25 year old from Quad Cities, IL. Home schooled and raised on a farm, she grew up in a town with a population of 600. She started to cut hair at the age of 16 when her local hair stylists couldnât cut her hair exactly how she desired -so she took matters into her own hands and picked up a pair of scissors. "I always want to have intriguing hair," says Eliza. "My hair has always been my way of expression."
Like most kids in small towns, she began taking long road trips with friends to major cities just to catch a few hardcore, punk, or metal bands at a show. It was at these shows that she began to receive nice compliments on her own hair from bands and others fans alike. She then responded to these comments by informing people that she cuts hair. After cutting a few band member's hair she began to always take her scissors and clippers with her to every show. "I'd start off by only cutting the hair of local bands, but they would introduce me to more bands and they in turn would introduce me to other bands," says Eliza. "Before I knew it I had cut hair for almost the entire Ferret Records roster."
By posting on her Myspace.com account which shows she would be attending, she began booking appointments at punk shows and cutting other kid's hair outside the venue in-between the bandâs sets or afterwards in the dark parking lot. And yes sometimes she gave haircuts in exchange for guest list spots.
During her entrance interview for beauty school, Eliza was asked what she wanted to accomplish as a hair stylist. "I want to be a rock band hair stylist," she replied. "I want to cut my favorite band's hair." The interviewer returned a look of disbelief.
Last October, Eliza attended the Nintendo Fusion tour to watch My Chemical Romance. While backstage, she met My Chemical Romance's singer: Gerard Way. "He stepped off of his bus and took a deep drag off of his cig," remembers Eliza. âHe then gave me the weirdest glance I have ever seen in my life. He thought he knew me but he didn't. After talking for a little bit he said âIt was nice to meet you, and I love your hair! It was at this point Eliza once again sold her profession and email addresses were exchanged. Two weeks later Eliza was driving to St. Louis to cut Gerard's hair for the cover of Spin magazine. "I was really skeptical at first on if this was really happening. I seriously thought it might have all been a bad joke." In exchange for his haircut, Gerard gave Eliza a make-up session.
"Not only did he tell me it was the best haircut he had ever had, he thanked me on stage in front of the audience that night," says Eliza. "I couldn't believe my favorite vocalist just complimented me in front of hundreds of people."
After a long and sentimental letter to Vans Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman requesting a job on this yearâs tour as a hair stylist, Eliza was asked to become part of the Girlz Garage staff and provide haircuts for the tour staff and attendees alike. She has been booked solid since day one of the tour. But if you want a rock star haircut, come by the Girlz Garage booth as early as you can without any product in your in hair and a really good attitude and ask Eliza nicely (but be aware she might already be booked for the day). Cookies as a gift won't hurt either!
