In a time when music and sports seem to be colliding left and right many critics question the idea of an athlete owning and running an entertainment company; especially when so many have tried and failed. Lots of people believe that athletes should stick to their sport while artists stay on the mic. After all, just because you are good at sports doesn..t mean you know a thing about music, right? WRONG!
Enter Milton ..Big.. Wynn, a 6..4 260lb. boxing giant who also knows a lot about music. "I was into music long before I even put on my first pair of gloves," Wynn assures of experience beyond the ring. "I started playing drums when I was 5 years old, piano at 12. From 5th to 12th grade I played tuba and trombone in the high school, orchestra, and symphony band. So I have been into music a long time unlike most athletes who start entertainment companies. They have the financing but don..t have the talent where they can actually play music and have an ear for it; I have been blessed with both. Music and writing are my first loves. I want to be known as the first legitimate athlete/artist. It..s always fun to see the reactions on people..s face when I sit down at a piano and began to play...
Rewind for a second so you can meet Big Wynn, the brains behind Wynn Entertainment & Music Group (W.E.M.G.). Born in Cincinnati, OH but raised from seven on in Perry, Georgia. Milton came from an educated family with a preacher father and teacher mother. "I grew up kind of being a little rough and just always into fighting and I grew up as a fighter." Wynn tells of his childhood.
In 1988 while attending Fort Valley State College in GA, Milton fell into boxing. "It was something I enjoyed doing. So I got into it, had a natural talent for it and was good at it," he remembers. The young boxer immediately started training for the Georgia State Games and two months later he won a gold medal in the heavyweight division. Milton went on fighting and barely missed the 1996 Olympics. In 1997 Wynn decided to turn professional leaving behind an amateur record of 22-1. In 2002 he suffered severe tendentious and a ruptured rotated cuff in his left shoulder. "I opted not to have surgery because statistics show most people don..t bounce back from the tough shoulder surgery procedure. So I just let time heal and my shoulder healed naturally over time. The natural process has taken longer than I wanted it to but my shoulder now is 100%...
With time off to pursue other dreams, Wynn created Wynn Entertainment & Music Group. W.E.M.G. is a versatile company which properly describes Big Wynn. Big Wynn has also been a national play writer for 10 years now and currently is the brainchild behind the current hit play ..Are There Any GOOD Men Left?.. His plays have garnered top reviews and built a huge fan base across the country. Big Wynn wrote, produced and acts in his current hit play. Big Wynn has worked with such stars as Keith Sweat, Gary ..Lil G.. Jenkins from the R&B group Silk, Vince Paul from the TV show Law & Order, Lil John & The Eastside Boys and many other national stars. His play has sold out several venues across the country and sold thousands of DVDs with no distribution.
Big Wynn..s current play has gained the attention of New Line Cinema and Lions gate Films. Both have expressed interest in working with Wynn to take the play to the big screen.
Although boxing is also my love, music and writing are my gifts. "Boxing, like other professional sports is not something that you can do on a professional level for the rest of your life. So I had to go back to something I enjoyed doing and was good at doing." In 2004 Wynn released a single produced by him and Lil John entitled Shake..Em Off. The song got up to 205 BDS spins per week and had a total of over 450 spins per week on all stations combined.
Big Wynn is now gearing up to release his new album, in 2007 his play will hit the road again touring the country. Boxing is also back on the horizon. With audiences averaging from 1500-2500 per night for the play, with the music and boxing, Big Wynn has a fan base that is h-u-g-e. While searching for a home for his independent label and artists, he will continue to make good positive music while building a solid fan base.
