Camelias Blancas

About Me

Sephardic music from multi-cultural Spain.Camelias Blancas plays Sephardic music in performances with lyrics and storytelling. The music and lyrics originated in medieval Spain where Muslims, Jews and Christians were living together peacefully at the time. The Sephardic songs include features from many different cultures and their beautiful melodies are the focusing point of our performances.Today we find Sephardic music in a number of different countries. When the Spanish Jews were driven out of Spain at the end of the 15th century, they brought with them their music, and thus the songs were transmitted to countries like Turkey, Greece and Morocco. The Sephardic songs are in an oral transmission and for centuries they have adapted musical expressions from different cultures.Camelias Blancas has played together since the year 2000 when they performed their first concert in Oslo Ladegård. The ensemble is based in the eastern part of Norway and has been touring in cooperation with Concerts Norway (Rikskonsertene) since 2002.Camelias Blancas' most recent performance "La Serena -treacherous women and moonlight secrecy" is sponsored by Fund for Performing Artists and The Arts Council Norway.Pictures by Kari Løvaas
