Did the win over Buffalo on Sunday remind you somewhat of the Oakland game from week 2?The Ravens dominated the Bills and owned time of possession. The offense moved the ball downfield, but the drives stalled and they settled for field goals. They let the Bills hang around a little too long, then the defense stepped up and put the game away. Kinda like the Oakland game…The Ravens clinched an all-important first round playoff bye on Sunday with a 19-7 win over a gritty Buffalo Bills team. The Ravens are a veteran squad and will greatly benefit with a week’s rest.It was a great game for the Ravens kickers. Kicker, Matt “Mr. Automatic†Stover was 4 for 4 on field goals, and rookie punter Sam Koch nailed three great kicks inside the 20 yard line. The Ravens oft-maligned offensive line set a team record (17) for fewest sacks allowed in a season. Folks, there’s some team that have triple that number. What’s impressive is that the OL has had injuries to three starters (Mulitalo, Vincent and Ogden) and they haven’t missed a beat.QB Steve McNair has been barely getting hit during games, especially during the second half of the season. A healthy McNair is the key to the Ravens Super Bowl chances.Pro Bowl DB Chris McAlister had a great game. His 31 yard interception return for a touchdown was a huge momentum changer. It got the home crowd back into the game and seemed to take some wind out of Buffalo’s sails. That wasn’t his only big play of the day. How important was his pass breakup when Buffalo had a third down near midfield in the second half, and their TE had slipped behind the secondary for a possible touchdown? You can’t teach that kind of athletic ability.Does RB Willis McGahee play for Buffalo? With 11 carries for a paltry 23 yards, you hardly noticed him in the game.It was a crazy day in the AFC wild card game chase. Denver and Cincinnati both lost home games in overtime to get eliminated from contention. The Jets and Chiefs both won home games and slid in the #5 and #6 seeds. The way the playoff picture shapes up, the Ravens may take on the Colts in Baltimore. I’m sure the emotions will run very high for fans if that game happens.Kudos to the Ravens front office. Once again the draft produced a handful of players who are making an impact on the field this season. Rookies, Haloti Ngata, Chris Chester, Demetrius Williams, Dawan Landry, Sam Koch, Quinn Sypnewski and Derrick Martin have all played this season. Undrafted free agents Cory Ross and Ronnie Prude have also contributed. In the age of the NFL salary cap, drafting and developing new players each year is very important. Considering the number of veterans and pro bowlers that are on the Ravens team, having this many rookies cracking the lineup is very impressive. The Terps finished their football season at 9-4 with a 24-7 win over pass happy Purdue in the Champs Sports Bowl on Friday night. Senior QB Sam Hollenbach finished up his signal calling career with a 2 TD performance, including a 46 yard rainbow to freshman standout WR Darrius Hayward-Bey from the McDonough School in Baltimore. The Terps played a stout defensive game, holding Purdue’s explosive offense to very little yardage running the ball and only one touchdown in the air.
