Hi, I'm Deer!
Okay, I'm Robert Jordan... and I'm human, not a woodland creature (sorry to dissapoint). Deer is the title under which I've been creating music for the past... ugh... I don't want to say how many years. I'm sure you'll just piece it all together as you continue to read the next paragraph...
Surprisingly enough, it all started out with breakdancing. I was really into it. I really wanted one of those radio raheem style boom boxes for my birthday. Instead I got this 1 speaker (yes, monotone) tape deck that pretty much sucked. Yes, it undoubtedly sucked. But, nevertheless I was still doing back spins to Jam-on-it and White lines (when I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about).
It was around this time that I also remember being fascinated with how music was made; especially music of that era. We're talking keyboards, record scratches, drum machines, and sampling. All stuff that wasn't produced by bands of the past. It was pure mystery to me. The pop bands of the early 80's had, I think, a big influence on what I'd do later on in music.
Rap and hip hop were still ruling my music world when I began to make music. 1st up were rap songs... though I mostly enjoyed playing DJ. Mixing and mashing up beats from old records got me into oldies in a different way. I knew where all the choice samples were, sometimes without knowing the entire song the way it was meant to be heard. I honed in on my production skills alot during this time, getting alot of practice on my 4 track recorder.
While scratchin my way through the next couple years I was also composing music on my computer. See, I had about 8 years of classical piano lessons when I was younger, and continued playing music(trumpet) in high school band. I enjoyed compoising stuff, though I never really expected to even show it to anybody, it was just a hobby.
Then Nirvana hit the scene. I'd avoided rock music throughout the hair band era, with the exception of the occasional MTV exposure (before and after Yo! MTV raps). Finally, a band that seemed to be about making music, and not about looking like women. Anyway, soon after I became obsessed with other early 90's rock such as the Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, etc..
My rap group sort of dwindled away, and I wrote my first non-rap song. I used one of my computer compositions, added some beats and samples from records and movies, added lyrics, and whalah - Deer was born. The first people I showed it to demanded to hear it over and over again, which pretty much blew me away, and encouraged me to continue on in this path.
During this time I got my first job, working stock boy at Ben Franklin, the local craft store. Best job ever, and lots of exposure to classic rock - as that was the choice music of our stock manager. The Who, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc.. It was also at Ben Franklin where I met Evan Markfield, aka Drake . He played guitar (damn well I might add), and we collaborated from time to time on eachothers music. Throughout the years we've been a source of encouragement for eachother, especially last summer when we shared the stage at the Knitting Factory for our first big show. (thanks for the monkey dance dude!)
For awhile there it was pretty much mainstream stuff that I was absorbing, with a high focus on the Beatles and Pink Floyd. Alot of that was new to me, even though it was stuff everyone else seemed to already know. There was just so much to absorb, and it was influencing the stuff I was writing. On the other hand, nothing I was writing sounded much like the beatles, as I was using drum machines, barely knew any chords on guitar, distorted my voice on everything (cuz I thought it sucked), and, well, yeah, it was wierd stuff.
Then came Ween. I remember quite vividly listening to Pure Guava tirelessly. Listening to the Pod in the woods with bon fires & beers. As much as I loved (and still love) Ween, they made making home-produced music seem not only feasible, but worth sharing with others. It was truly inspirational. At the same time, my good friend Brian Hammond's cousin's band ( Whatsoever ) had just printed singles on vinyl of their hit song "Mind if I?". They were producing albums from their basement studio, which was also inspiring. The momentum picked up as the motivational feedback continued from Brian, the head of the Shiza Records fan club to date, and undoubtedly my biggest fan (thanks Bri).
That brings me to Bandito . This was the combined musical efforts of Brian Hammond and myself. This was the first time I'd shared the writing, producing, and creative process with someone else; at least on this scale. It was a terrific learning experience. Brian's ability to capture and deliver emotion in his vocal performances was truly inspiring, and the entire album is this beautiful slice of our lives at that time.
The Bandito album was titled Pinata Party, and to celebrate it's arrival, we threw one. We setup interactive stations around the house where party goers could participate in the album by contributing artwork, and even audio clips that would be added to the final cut. Ryan Barfield had contributed his percussion expertise on the album, and was also integral in planning the event.
I'd say it was around this time that Ryan and I began to realize that we would work together as a team on a future project, later known as The Guppies . This again, was not only great fun to put together, but the extroardinary talent that Ryan brought to the table made the album ( Cycle Hydrologic ) an irresistable listen, and an instant hit with friends. It was a concept album based on our 9 to 5 lifestyles in corporate America.
Throughout these side projects, Deer hasn't lost any momentum, but it has had many facelifts. I've learned guitar, drums, bass, and upgraded much of my equipment. I've gained great insight from working with others, and continue to be influenced by them and their love of music.
Now, if you've made it this far in the story, then I'm truly honored to have kept your attention for this long. Thanks so much for your interest. It's not the most fascinating story, it's just mine. I hope you enjoy what you hear... remember there's much much much more at shizarecords.com
Hope to see you there, and let me know what you think.Pro Cons

Now, the above bio is mainly in regards to Deer, not so much me, Robert Jordan. Actually, most people would refer to me as Bob Jordan or Bobby Jordan or Bobtainer or Boblick lick of Bob or Flash Jordan or DJ Flash Jordan or Bobber the clown or Bobber TC or BTC and so on. Actually, I'd like this mini section of my bio be to the point and contain as many phrases that would be potentially searched on by those of you out there that shared many of the same memories.
