Old Scraper

About Me

Hi! Welcome to Old Scraper's bio. Wooo Hooo! Would you believe it? What can I say? This band usually consists of me, and sometimes another me, and/or me, gigging in the lounge room, the old gaol, or out in the bush. Here is a recent clip of me taken out in the bush at Glen Helen.Downloaded Audacity in January '06 when we had 13 days in a row over 40 degrees Celsius. My car was broken down and I couldn't get anyone to fix it. Everyone here escapes the heat by going south for the Christmas school holidays (the town gets quite deserted - even the tip shop closes). Can't get a tradesman for love or money then. I had just done a nearly 6,000 km round trip to see the folks, and we'd come back through 46 degrees. The car and I were tuckered out. Too hot to venture far outside on foot during the day, so I turned off the airconditioner and started dabbling with home recording instead.I'm learning, a long slow process. There have been lots of frustrating little hiccups and hurdles along the way ... and I've been taking Skype lessons with James Kelly, that I highly recommend. Thank you James. As ever, luvin' the journey! Keepin' me hand in! And that's what really counts, hey!Apologies to Irish Traditional Music for the untraditional playing of Mayor Harrison's Fedora - it is one of my early experiments and I had to try and fit the playing of the tune onto a slightly imperfect rap backing rhythm created by two of my kool now ex-school students. Thanks guys for allowing me ta use yer stuff ... hey, also thanks to Jim McAuley for leading the Ozzy Session from Larne in Northern Ireland (track one), and an anonymous banjo player from somewhere in the world fer playing with me from a secret location somewhere around the globe (track 6). I really appreciate the three of you. Ta very very much.PS: I really am an "old" scraper, well not really, but I have grown a few grey hairs in out in with The Music and intend to be learning and playing it fer a long time to come. Jest luv it. And there you have it.PPS: Please toss the doggy ankle biters, Marla, Sasha and Carna, a treat as you walk in the door. The dogs are an integral part of "The Band?" (hear Marla's contribution in Mayor Harrison's Fedora), and she takes her self appointed job of house guard dog very very seriously indeed. Sasha'll retrieve a tennis ball and play a rough game of soccer out the back and Carna will run away with anything not tied down - don't wear your good clothes when ya come to visit here lest you leave in good humoured tatters.Sorry about the woeful sound quality and the woeful playing ... sheeze I wish I could do better! Here is a slide show I made recently ... there isn't any music to it. The trick is that you should provide your own, your most favourite CD playing in the background while you view it!

Influences: Into Irish Traditional Music, that's all, jest luv it. Recent influences are via the internet: MySpace, YouTube, artist/band/record company web sites, emails and 'the session'; MP3's, CD's, tapes and records; the myriad of dedicated ITM musicians who play, talk, teach, perform, share etc., and contribute to making the beautiful music accessible to the world.
I would particularly like to recognise the late Paidi Ban O'Broin, flute player, dancer and real character, who composed "Poor but happy at 53" (a big thanks too to Paul Kelly for the info and this link to Paidi Ban O'Broin stepdancing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?V=WzS9pAwtZyk). He composed a great tune with such relevance to the life of this old scraper - just love it. So thanks fer the music mate! A big good-on-ya! You have made a poor old scraper in Central Oz very happy indeed. Here's a link to Paidi Ban O'Brion on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmD-1q43nmk Thanks to Clarebannerman for putting the clip up ... and here is me playing Poor but Happy at 53, composed by Paidi Ban O'Broin, inside the old gaol one Saturday morning. Thank you so much for such a beautiful tune:..

My thanks also to Dave Richardson for composing Calliope House, a lovely little jig (which I apparently play in the wrong key) and to Randal Bays for his superb rendition of the 98 and 99 Marches put up on YouTube. Loverly tunes. A million thanks. Wish I could do one of your Friday Harbor schools in March - one day. In the meantime, here's a collaboration I did with Boombella in America:... and this experiment I did with Corel VideoStudio Pro, influenced by the movie of walking the dogs in the bush at sunset and the Redgum tune "Diamentina Drover" (which I couldn't remember all of when I made the walking the dogs movie clip) ... lovely tune ... sigh!:... and this movie of walking the dogs in the bush at sunset, heavily influenced by the beauty of the bush around the McDonnell Ranges very close to Alice Springs and the Redgum song "Diamentina Drover":
Sounds Like: I think the band sounds just like me, and me, and sometimes me and/or me, or maybe a scaulded cat ...
