The Story of BRUTEFORCE is a long story. It starts back in 1989 with a Thrash/Death Metal Project (the main influences of this band were SEPULTURA, RATOS DE PORÃO, PANTERA, SLAYER, etc.) called "CORROSÃO", this project was at his very beginning a two-man band, formed by Ricardo Silva and Pedro Guerra and it was mainly a Portuguese lyrics thrash band.
The first songs were strong attacks to the social injustices of our world, in those times we wrote themes like “Parasitas Sociaisâ€, “Corrosãoâ€, “M18â€, etc, in a small basement studio called “A ARPA†in Lisbon.
A few months later started the search for new elements to complete the band, because Pedro Guerra was dividing is playing between the Rhythm Guitar and the Drums, and Ricardo Silva was playing Bass and Lead Guitars;
The first try was a Bass Player called Nuno TerrÃvel that played with the band only for a few weeks, and also Israel Luis a guitar player from Pedro Guerra family, Israel Luis only played with the band a couple of times but in that little time he was a great help in the development of the guitar playing methods of the present Guitarists in BRUTEFORCE (Pedro Guerra & Ricardo Silva).
In 1991 the band changed the name to “SACRILÉGIO†and the songs lyrics language also changed to English. The rehearsal room was now is Sacavém, in a studio called JAP Estúdios. Ricardo Silva and Pedro Guerra focused their musical and technical practice in the Guitars, and a drummer joined the band: Pedro Alfredo (Gastão), followed by a Vocals: Carlos Malcata.
With this base formation SACRILÉGIO started a phase of fast growth in many aspects: Rhythm, Technique, Song Writing, Lyrics Writing, and most of all – as band.
In this period songs like “Werewolfâ€, “Sacrilégioâ€, “Chaotic Futureâ€, “In the Name of Human Raceâ€, “No Moreâ€, etc. were written. The band first live performance happened in 22 May of 1992, in a underground rock contest between bands from several schools of Lisbon, the contest stage was placed in the high-school “Escola Secundária Eça de Queirós†also known as “Viveirosâ€.
This first live act was an extremely positive experience (even with a “live-act-only†bass player named Tiago that left stage in the middle of the act to our surprise) and the reaction from the public was great, this worked as a fuel injection in the band core.
It was a matter of one or two weeks until a new bass player joined the group – Bruno Santos-, and with this Bass Player the band performed live some more times, for example: in C.A.T. a multi-sports pavilion, or in the Bobadelense Pavillion.
These live acts are worth mentioning because they were the beginning of a strong friendship with some bands that in the years to come would share many live stages with SACRILÉGIO, these bands were 605 FORTE, WALPURGIS and MENTE PODRE.
A few months later SACRILÉGIO changed bass player again, Jorge Julião entered the band replacing Bruno Santos. This was also the time when the band recorded their first Demo CD, this Demo CD was recorded in the STS Studios in Sacavém and had 9 original songs:
“Hipocrisyâ€, “Chaotic Futureâ€, “Werewolfâ€, “No Moreâ€, “In The Name Of Human Raceâ€, “Sacrilégioâ€, “Satan & Powerâ€, “Kill To Survive, and “Live and Dieâ€.
With this formation (Vocals - Carlos Malcata, Lead Guitar – Ricardo Silva, Rhythm Guitar – Pedro Guerra, Bass Guitar – Jorge Julião, Drums – Pedro Alfredo) SACRILÉGIO performed Live dozens of times, always achieving an extreme empathy with the public due to the fast and aggressive attitude and gathering fans and underground fame.
From that time we can use as example several live performances: RockLine (Underground music contest where we reached the Finals), Vias Raras Metal Fest, several Acts in the Bobadelense pavillion, etc.
In 1994 a new Demo CD started to be recorded in JAP ESTUDIOS, with some renewed versions of old songs (Satan & Power, No More, Kill to Survive) and new themes like: Victims Of Society, Feeding My Hate, The Revenge, Angel From The Dark and Whose The Law… but this Demo CD was not meant to see the outside of the recording studio, because some internal band issues were starting to arise…
A few time later (1994/95), some of the SACRILÉGIO members (the ones that now are part of UTOPIA) were searching fore a more technical and melodic approach to the Metal sound. Unfortunately these ideas were not shared by the other members of SACRILÉGIO, and that caused the creation of another band called "EDEN".
But after 7 months Pedro Alfredo (Drums) and Jorge Julião (Bass Guitar) decided to play only with EDEN, leaving Ricardo Silva (Lead Guitar) as the only common element between this two bands.
SACRILÉGIO Last live act happened in 1996 in the stage of a local bar called “CORAÇÕES DE VALE DE FIGUEIRA†and not even the crowd excellent reaction made the leaving members change their minds.
Pedro Guerra and Ricardo Silva fought against the band end for some time, some rehearsals were tried with the drummer Luis Filipe also known as “Bafo†from the band MENTE PODRE, unfortunately, the style of play was not the same. The SACRILÉGIO project "died" a few months later because in those times it was very difficult to find a fast paced drummer with enough stamina to play the band songs.
Now we must jump 8 years into the future. In the year 2004, more precisely in the 10th September, after many years, almost without any contact, Ricardo Silva called Pedro Guerra to invite him to his Birthday Party Dinner in that night. The invitation was accepted, and in this dinner the idea to re-make the Thrash/Death Metal band was born.
As a well deserved tribute to the memory of SACRILÉGIO it was decided that the first song of this newborn project was going to be a faster and even angriest version of the song “Feeding My Hateâ€, and this decision was accomplished with total success. Once again the two guitarists and founders of the project were looking for members to complete the band.
Fortunately the world has also evolved during all this time, and in these days is much easier to find people and to turn ideas into facts. The first three choices were Fernando Biléu (ex- 605 FORTE) to the drums, VÃtor Moreira (ex- MENTE PODRE) for the bass and Benny (a long date friend) was chosen to the vocals.
During a few months with this formation and with the temporary band name “CHAINSAW†the mentioned song was perfected and a new theme was written “This Is Not a Drillâ€, but in the beginning of 2005 some personal problems forced the drummer and the vocals to leave the band.
The search for a new drummer and also for a vocals was fast. Johnny also known as João Cigano (from the band WORTH THE FIGHT), was chosen to the drums and Bruno Silva (This guy had never been part of a band before, but his voice totally blew us away) was chosen for the vocals.
This band alignment unfortunately was also not destined to last. In a few weeks the drummer was exchanged. Fernando Biléu returned to the drums. With these 5 elements the song “BIOCIDE†was written and a few arrangements were made to the two previous songs.
In a couple of months however (beginning of 2006) Fernando Biléu and VÃtor Moreira decided to leave the band again due to personal issues.
The replacement was fast and Pedro Honório Silva (ex- 605 FORTE) occupied the bass player position, while João Ferreira (today’s ETERNAL WHISPER drummer) was chosen to the drums.
In the following months some developments occurred, the band name was changed to BRUTEFORCE and two new themes were starting to take form, “Visions of Death†and “Spark – The Ascentâ€.
In the early days of September 2006 João Ferreira decided to leave the band mostly because of his musical preference was more focused in the power metal genre. After some months of drummer auditions the fifth element was finally found, João Rafael also known as “Rafa†(also drummer of the band WRIGHT) was chosen to be the Drums player of BRUTEFORCE.
This settled the band formation for good. New themes are being developed and many live acts are planned.
So go and get those combat boots and practice your stage diving and slam dancing skills, because BRUTEFORCE is alive and kicking!
