About Me
Allias’: Getem, Messiah, Yella Dude
Residence: North Side, Mil-Town(Brew City)The year is 1995. Mella-G, already a writer and musician, co-founded a hip-hop duo with long time friend Ladi. The duo named themselves Reign. Focusing ..ting edge lyrics and a sound that was a cross between Jazz, Classical, and Hip Hop, the duo began writing songs in hopes of making a shop able demo. As time went on there seemed to be a void that needed to be filled.
The year is 1996. Reign adds three members: Tony Strings, Origin-Al, and Dazed. This completed a five-man group which through its diverse member’s styles, covered every genre of not only hip-hop, but music all together. The five began writing, producing, and recording together, focusing on a demo.
The year is 1997. In the midst of recording their demo the group comes to find that their name (Reign) is being used by not only one, but two other artists, who just so happen to come from their home town. Realizing that this could be a conflict of intrest, the group brainstormed on alternatives. Considering each of the members brought their own element to the group, and in Hip-Hop there are four elements (graffiti, dance, MCing, and DJing) they agreed on the name The 5th Element.
The year is 1998. After countless attempts shopping their demo, the group decided to release an under ground album independently. Wanting to come up with all fresh material, the group gave themselves a month to record a 15 track album entitled The Dry Storm, symbolizing the arrival without the “Reign†(un-expected). The album was produced entirely by Ladi and Mella-G.
The year is 1999. On Jan. 29th The album was released, and distributed independently. After a quick two weeks 200 copies were sold and the group found they had become not only the hottest group in their school but also in various neighbor hoods in their city. The local record labels took serious interest, and the group spent the next 3 years working on demos with various record labels, which never came through. Over the course of these years two members were lost. Dazed decided to go solo, and Ladi focusing on R&B, moved to Atlanta.
The year is 2002. The remaining members took all of the music they had been working on the last 3 years, along with a few new tracks and pressed up a double disc album self entitled The 5th Element. The album was complete with a bonus 5-E mix tape hosted by the one and only DJ Nustyles. The group released the album independently and sold roughly 300 units in the city. (Album still available at CDBaby.com/fifthelemnt)
The year is 2004. The three members spending the last year trying to build a record label and relationships with local artist, studios, producers, and execs, begin production on the first in a series of mix tapes called the Grey Series. The mix tape was completed the same year, sold throughout the city, and still widely talked about and requested.
The year is 2005. The group begins production on there junior album The 5th Element vol. 2 to be released early ’06.
Currently Mella-G is working on a solo album as-well-as solo mix tape entitled Rap is God and he’s Jesus. This was made possible by Urban Vision who linked Mella with the Beat Brothers whose sound fit like a glove.
