Born in Shanghai on the 10th of April 1986, Barry Luo moved to Australia with his family at the age of five and began his cello lessons with Qing-yu Qin in Melbourne at the age of eleven. It was an eight year journey during which he won the Dandenong Eisteddfod under 16's cello category in 2001 and was a finalist at the Preston Youth Concerto competition in 2003. Barry was also selected as a part of the VCAA Season of Excellence Program in 2004 and performed in the Top Acts Concert at the Melbourne Concert Hall in the following year. Barry has been awarded the AMus.A and LMus.A diplomas by the AMEB and has also been awarded the Dip.ABRSM with distinction. After one year of study at the Melbourne University Music Conservatory, during which Barry undertook the BMUS course, still studying under Qing-Yu Qin, he travelled abroad to Freiburg in South Germany in 2006, where he studied for six months with Adriana Contino at the Musikhochschule Freiburg. Barry is currently continuing his BMUS cello studies with Karine Georgian at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester as a recipient of the 2006 ABRSM International Undergraduate Scholarship. As a soloist and a chamber musician, Barry has also taken lessons with Ralph KIirshbalm and Liwei amongst others and has played in the Kronberg masterclass series for Janos Starker. In his time in the UK Barry has performed as a soloist in venues including the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford and St. Ann’s Church in Manchester. Barry was a participant and scholarship holder at the 2008 Dartington International Summer School masterclass series. Barry is currently a member of the Hyde Quartet, founded in April 2007. The quartet has performed in numerous concert venues across the UK since then, most notably at the Longleat Castle before Lord Baths in late May 2007. The quartet has received tuition and guidance from acclaimed chamber musicians and professors including Alasdair Tait, Jo Cole, Jeremy Young, Alice Neary, Endellion Quartet and Danell Quartet. Since 2008, Barry has become a member of the RNCM Cello Ensemble. The ensemble performed their debut concert in June 2008, playing works including Barry Guy’s Look up!.
