About Me

In the Studio........October 2008................THE STORY SO FAR........ Born in London to Irish parents, Deirdre studied classical music from the age of six, playing piano and flute as well as singing. She went on to study music at tertiary level, sang with the London Symphony Chorus and freelanced as a church organist at many London churches. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ Haunting and emotive are two words that could be used to describe Deirdre's musical style. However, with her rich blend of material ranging from traditional ..sean nos' (unaccompanied ballads) through to contemporary songs, it is difficult to encompass her unique style in two words. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ Performing predominantly as a soloist ,Deirdre has sung on New Zealand television, recorded for Radio New Zealand and has headlined at the Wellington and Christchurch Folk Festivals. She is also the first singer to represent New Zealand at the prestigious Fleadh Cheoil na h'Eireann where she competed in the Unaccompanied Singing competition. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ At the end of 1997, she won the much-coveted Folk Award at the Wellington Music Awards and found time to commence recording with the notable New Zealand record label, White Cloud. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ In December 1998, White Cloud, created by the legendary British musician and producer, Jon Mark, released The Leaving of Ireland CD featuring Deirdre on the vocal tracks. In the 1960's, Jon worked with Marianne Faithfull on her first five albums. In the late 1960's, he joined John Mayall and the Blue's Breakers and went on to form the hugely popular US-based Mark Almond Band. In the 1980's, Jon moved to New Zealand and explored his love of Celtic melodies and song. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ In 1999, Deirdre signed to White Cloud. She began working on her solo album with Jon Mark as producer. She took time-out in early 2000 when her son was born although she continued to record material for her new album. Deirdre's album, ..Quiet Land of Erin' was released in June 2003. ____________________________________________________________ _______________ In August 2003, Deirdre moved to Ireland and is now based in Co. Wicklow. In October 2003, she was invited to Germany to perform material from her album for the acclaimed live music programme, ..Matinee der Liedersanger' hosted by Jan Reichow for WDR-5 Radio. In June 2006 Deirdre began work on her album by the Way.... with time spent back in New Zealand working on new material. In October Deirdre began recording the album with Trevor Hutchinson again on production duties. The Album was released in Germany and Switzerland in Feburary 2007 as Deirdre begian a 3 week tour. Deirdre is featured on the soundtrack with the song 'Castle of Dromore' from her album Quite Land of Erin available through Naxos/White Cloud. ____________________________________________________________ _______________2008 saw Deirdre along with long time musical partner, bassist David Leahy begin a German Tour in Feburary. My sad heart strove the two between The old love and the new love. The old for her the new That made me think on Ireland dearly. While soft the wind blew down the glade and shook the golden barley.T'was hard the woeful words to frame To break the ties that bound us. But harder still to bear the shame of foreign chains around us. And so I said the mountain glen I'll meet at morning early. And I'll join the bold united men While soft winds shook the barley.T'was sad I kissed away her tears My fond arm round her flinging. When a foe, man's shot burst on our ears >From out the wild woods ringing. A bullet pierced my true love's side In live's young spring so early. And on my breast in blood she died While soft winds shook the barley. But blood for blood without remorse I've ta'en at oulart hollow. I've lain my true love's clay like corpse Where I full soon must follow. Around her grave I've wandered drear Noon, night, and morning early. With breaking heart when e'er I hear The wind that shakes the barley.

Performing the songs and tunes I love and developing new material or hearing an old tune in a new vein, recording or working with others who love the music as I do are the things I love so much that I'd be lost without them. Some people work to live; I can't imagine not living to play.”Deirdre Starr

(2007)....................................................Av ailable from www.claddghrecords.com.................Singer/Pianist Deirdre Starr releases her 3rd album ‘by the Way’. Traditional songs of love, loss and heartbreak are re-written and re-worked to produce a sound that is traditional but yet classical. Deirdre is again working with Trevor Hutchinson (Lunasa) and features David Leahy (London Improvisor’s Orchestra) on double bass, Mark Kelly (Altan) on guitar, and Máire Breatnach playing violin and viola. The songs are built primarily around the piano and double bass with subtle accompaniment provided by Mark and Máire. Deirdre’s voice, pure and unadorned, draws the listener deep into the songs.A perfect follow up album to 'The long finger', 'by the way...' features for the first time on cd the combined talents of Deirdre Starr and David Leahy, and a relationship that has existed for about 15 years. The cd has once again been produced and engineered by Trevor Hutchinson (Lúnasa) at Marguerite Studios, Dublin. Label: Sloanstarrstateofmind; SSSOM002; 2007; Playing time: 48:07 min Since just talking about June Tabor , this is a fitting comparison (if only for June Tabor's trademark piano accompaniment). Deirdre Starr is a kind of Irish counter part, interpreting traditional songs mainly on the piano. Well, different voice anyway. "By the way..." is already her third album altogether. Deirdre Starr is again working with Trevor Hutchinson (Lunasa), and the songs are spun around both instruments, piano and double bass. Furthermore, there is a discreet Mark Kelly (Altan) on guitar and Máire Breatnach playing violin and viola. All songs are traditional (except the depressing "Kilkelly", words by Peter Jones set to a traditional air) Well known are: "What put the Blood" (a mix of Christy Moore's and the Old Blind Dogs version), "Bonny Woodhall", "Emigrant's Farewell". Less known: the Ulster song "Molly Hollywood" (air by the late Eithne Ní Uallacháin whose mother translated the song into English), "The Sun is Gone Down in the West" (courtesy of Elizabeth Cronin), "Blackthorn Tree" and "Little Sister" (both with new tunes), and "Wind and Rain" (not to be confused with the well known Appalachian song "Rain and Snow"). Mesmerising and evocative, the sublime voice and piano blend delicately with the subtle additions of cello, double bass and flute. Produced by Trevor Hutchinson (Lunasa), ‘The Long Finger’ weaves the familiar and not so familiar songs together – from the unaccompanied ‘less is more’ Barbara Allen to the unique piano arrangement of ‘I wish I was in England’. There is a sense of space in the songs, a touch of classical in the arrangements and a timeless emotion in the voice. Not to be missed. The Long Finger was recorded, produced and engineered by Trevor Hutchinson (Lúnasa) at Marguerite Studios, Dublin. Guest musicians included Vyvienne Long and Alan Doherty (Gráda).................................................... ............................................................ ............................................................ ............................................................ ......... ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------Relocation is never easy and the long white clouds of New Zealand are a long way from the Wicklow Mountains, but it won’t be long before singer Deirdre Starr establishes herself in her new home. She brings a bold and innovative approach to the familiar terrain of Irish songs like Christy Moore’s I wish I was in England and Yeat’s Song of Wandering Aengus. The voice, pure and unadorned, establishes an immediate rapport, but it’s her own piano accompaniment that captivates, and evidence that she’s put her years of classical studies as organist and chorister to good use. Restrained contemporary harmonies and an impressionistic sense of space create a delicate new context that bridges the old and the new, and marks her as a welcome new presence on the Irish music scene. ------ www.kilkennyarts.ie 2005-------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ -- The Quiet Land of Erin (2003) - Deirdre Starr and John Mark----- Review from The Madness Music Company (New Zealand) ----Album of the Month – July 2003------This voice, the sublime voice of Deirdre Starr, draws you in deep, past the lyrics, into the very essence of the song. Contemporary Irish songs mix with the traditional and that voice just pulls you in, making you feel that you are hearing these familiar songs for the first time. Less is more, as the subtle, beautiful arrangements on piano and keyboard blend with the delicate guitar of legendary musician and producer Jon Mark (Marianne Fathfull, John Mayall, Mark-Almond Band).Dominic Behan's ‘Patriot Game' and the Christy Moore penned ‘I wish I was in England' have unique piano accompaniments, arranged and played by Deirdre. A fresh approach to the familiar makes for worthwhile listening. Review from ‘Irland Journal' XV, 3.04 (RHB: NEULAND) Germany --------Deridre Starr is an Irish singer based in New Zealand. The voice you will hear now, the wonderful changes, the breath, the slowed-down time, which is filling, all of this belongs to one woman about who's life people unwillingly start thinking about. The CD is from the beginning to the end, soft and beautiful. You can listen to it on a moonlit summer's night. You can sit on a balcony, listen to it, without getting up once to turn the volume down. The neighbours will notice and start asking where are these beautiful tones coming from. This voice wont leave your mind. ---------Jan Reichow WDR-3 Radio, Germany----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ -----The Leaving of Ireland (1999)Jon Mark,David Antony Clark with Deirdre Starr"A sonic experience that is both spellbinding and highly seductive" ( New Frontier Magazine)--------Review from Discord Distribution ---------The Leaving Of Ireland features the sublime voice of Deidre Starr in three stunning vocal tracks, 'Freeborn Man,' 'Kathleen' and 'Dreams of Freedom.' Each track expresses subtle beauty, tenderness and yearning. The album combines the plaintive voices of pipes and whistles with evocative music and emotional narratives. It is the first collaboration between Jon Mark and David Antony Clark. They have worked side by side before as producer and engineer on each other's projects since the inception of the White Cloud label in 1993. But this is their first project together by name. Recorded with Jon Mark and David Antony Clark.------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ---- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ----- Extract from interview, Irish Music Magazine , Vol 5, No.3, Oct. 99‘I have always liked the Flower of Magherally. I think I first heard Jackie Kenny from Galway sing it and I loved it. Then the song reappeared in New Zealand. We were playing a concert in Wellington, and Deirdre Starr, a great singer based in New Zealand, was playing support, and when she sang the song I got the shivers on the back of my neck.Mairín Fahy (Riverdance, Reeltime, Furry Village)
