I just finished my first-ever read on the subway. I couldn't put down The Lovely Bones - read it! Slouching Towards Bethlehem (Goodbye To All That) (On Keeping a Notebook), Catcher In the Rye, The Leaving, The Great Gatsby, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge, Summer Sisters, Catch 22, Bless Me Ultima, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland, The Prophet. I'm into reading memoirs right now and am fascinated by books on meditation and zen teachings. Goodbye My Brother by John Cheever is one of my favorite short stories. I'm a poet and writers such as Raymond Carver, Hayden Carruth, Sylvia Plath, and Tony Hoagland have inspired me. I love going to used book stores and discovering new authors. A book of poetry called Rites of Passage has some amazing pieces about NYC and lost time.
"I though it was 'If a body catch a body,' " I said. "Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around--nobody big. I mean--except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff--I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy."
