---------------------------------------
It all started way back when in freshman year (2004). It also ended that year, too.
But there are no boundaries to when an unyielding aspiration comes into fruition. Somehow we must remember that all things start simple, and this particular story started with a wooden stick and a little black disc that we like to call a puck.
As with any creation, there’s always that turmoil that accompanies the growth process - the storm before the sunny day. For this story, the life of the aspiration nearly died. With no hopes of any sort of win or any sort of positive; with little guidance and many setbacks, that aspiration grew into a reality. It grew in dark, murky mud where others grow in the bright sun.
We all know that there is a certain boy by the name of Yen Le. We all know that he had that aspiration. He likes to refer to it as “placing 7th in our division. Yes. I mean the NATION. Nationals. SEVENTH.” I could sit here and talk about all the really BAD stuff he went through. I could tell you all about the stuff that he and his club members suffered through: physically, emotionally, and mentally.
But I’m not going to.
Why? For one, I wasn’t on their team. I wasn’t able to experience the toils they went through. And to attempt to capture completely just how the Loara Hockey Team felt and learned and experienced in just a few paragraphs will be doing the team a great injustice. For another, no one needs me to write about all of that. We know it. We may not be able to fully comprehend what this team had to go through, but we can see the team’s perseverance, strength, discipline, and passion. It’s there when we hear “there’s going to be a Saxon hockey club meeting today…” on the announcements. It’s there when we see the team heading out to scrimmage afterschool. It’s there when each team member proudly wears his jersey. But most of all, its there when they hit the puck. Its there when their grip tightens on the hockey stick; it’s most definitely there when that puck goes flying.
They have every right to be proud of themselves - and we Saxons should all be proud of them. Their reason for chasing after the puck may be incomprehensible to us, but there is no doubt in any of us that they have truly accomplished a great milestone: a milestone strong enough to change the tides of any tumultuous sea.
And since I wrote this in a bit of inspiration, I apologize to Mr. Yen Le for leaving out some elements of the story that he gave to me. But all he wanted to say was thank-you to all the students and Loara staff that supported the team. He also wanted everyone to “keep in mind, that in our first year of existence, we finished 7th in the nation! The United States!”
To the Team: Congrats, you guys! We’re all really proud of you.
