About Me
Terrance Afer-Anderson has written 19 stage plays, 3 screenplays, and innumerable poetry and pieces of prose. He has also produced and directed more than 50 stage and television productions. Amongst his most popular plays are "HIRAM & NETTIE," a love story between two slaves from opposite ends of slave society (e.g., "big house" vs. field slave); "VICTORY MANOR," a 1970s examination of a Vietnam veteran's battle between his Christian upbringing and the influences of the Nation of Islam: "THE SIDON SIX," a courtroom drama involving six HIV-positive activists charged with breaking and entering and abduction; "THE OUTLYERS," based in part on historic events, the tale of a ragtag group of runaway slave children who go deep into the Great Dismal Swamp in search of a secret slave society that lived there for 80 years; "TEMPEST," chronicling the experiences of a New Orleans couple going through a horrific divorce, finding themselves trapped on a rooftrap for several days, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina; and "FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ," the tale of an aging musician's legendary love for his 5-year-old son "Jazz", finally "making it" on the eve of his worst nightmare.
Terrance's screenplays have begun to generate considerable interest. Both "RAILINGS," the tale of a 12-year-old HIV-positive runaway who encounters an angel on a freight train, and "THE FIFTH," the story of five generations of African-American men, all impacted by the repeated incarceration of a single father, are being considered for development.
All of Terrance's pieces are written to chronicle the African American experience; examining socially-relevant and historical themes through an ebony prism resplendent with remarkable highlights. He has won numerous regional awards and was a featured playwright at the 25th Annual Middle Atlantic Writers Conference "THIS AUGUST OCCASION: Examining Black Achievement in Literature, Performing Arts & Telecommunications," Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland, 2004.
Terrance also writes, produces and hosts a community affairs show, entitled "HealthWatch," previous editions available at www.norfolk.gov/tv48/health_watch.asp. Presently, he is developing a new television news magazine, specifically designed for a minority, culturally diverse audience. "Stay tuned!"
Following is a brief sample of some Terrance's prose, a circumspective look he says at the creative spirit that defines his essential being.
"Sitting on the edge of today, I let my legs dangle over the side, the child inside still marveling at the lessons learned yesterday and looking with wide-eyed anticipation at the wonders to be harvested tomorrow, the seasoned man dancing on the edge, muscles rippling with humility, the serum of truth coursing through my veins, massive pumping heart syncopating with rhythms fed by promises of yesterday, today and tomorrow. And I am best defined by both, exquisite mixture of man and child in a promised land, a strange enchanted boy, bearing a kingly African crown, whose pockets are lined with the riches of endless faith, uncompromising hope, and a charitable heart; clothed in fabric weaved from a magnificent spirit and a luminescent soul."
