Litmus is a non profit record label working from a flat in Hove. It has now been running for over two years and was set up by Jack Phillips, Mark Allen and Sam. It began as a radio project for Radio Reverb, with Jack collecting literally hundreds of cd's, tapes and minidiscs from all over Brighton from people who had entered their music, hoping to get air play on the Brighton Festival radio station.
It soon became obvious that the talent on offer was staggering. In collecting all this music it seemed a crime not to do something with it and release it. A launch night was planned at the Hanbury Ballroom with a number of the artists doing live electronica shows with laptops and/or hardware.
The label has not looked back since, putting on numerous nights all over Brighton and having a weekly residency at the Enigma in 2006. We got some funding last winter, artists planned and partook in workshops at the Crew club in Whitehawk, the intention to bring music production to the masses and put something back into society by teaching young people how to make and create beats, warped sounds or whatever took their fancy.
We are planning another run of workshops at the Crew Club and maybe at other community halls and venues around Brighton.
Message us if you'd like to get involved, or have music to submit.
peace
