My name is Roisin (pronounced ro-sheen). I'm originally from Northern-Ireland, but currently live in MN, USA. I have lived here for almost 15 years. I'm married to Michael who is from Minnesota. I have 3 children, 2 daughters, Helen aged 21 and Claire aged 18 and a wee son Caden who was 6 in May. My daughters still live in N-Ireland. My son lives here with myself and his father. I am maintaining this site on behalf of my son Caden who suffers from multiple medical issues
Caden was born with a Combined Immune Deficiency which by history is demonstrating itself to be a lethal form of Primary Immune Deficiency. His immune deficiency is one that has been best characterized to fit into a variety of immune deficiency which is called ALPS-like (Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome).
Caden has had several severe life threatening complications, including Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia when he was a baby, chronic Bronchiectasis and more recently Fungal Pneumonia (Invasive Aspergillus), and Pure Red Cell Aplasia requiring chronic blood transfusions. He has had 17 transfusions and 5 major hospital stays since June 2008.
This past month he developed severe Neutropenia secondary to possible drug effects versus infection versus bone marrow failure. Because of this, in addition to his Polyendocrinopathy (Type 1 Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, etc) which his doctors believe is immune based, it has been recommended to consider pursuing a bone marrow transplant before the opportunity to perform such a procedure is lost. This will be done over the next several weeks.
Caden also suffers from "failure to thrive." He has no appetite and recently developed pain in his throat which has doctors mystified. Because of this we agreed to having a G-Tube placed in his tummy and so far it is working out great. He has already put on several pounds in just a few weeks. Hopefully the good nutrition will also help him in his battle with all his illness.
