The name Houston Comets was created and quickly became a dominant and recognizable force of the WNBA. After winning four championships in the first four years of the league's existence, the Comets also became the first dynasty of the WNBA. They have won more championships than any other team in the WNBA.Sheryl Swoopes, a former Texas Tech star, was the first player signed by the Comets. The Comets then hired Van Chancellor from the University of Mississippi as their head coach and landed another star, Cynthia Cooper, who was in Italy playing pro basketball and ended up becoming the league's first MVP. After landing Swoopes and Cooper when the league was in the development stages, Houston locked up forward Tina Thompson in the 1997 WNBA draft with the No. 1 overall pick.The rest is history and, just like that, the Comets had a trio of stars to win championships.The Comets play at the Toyota Center May through September.
