Some events in a person's life tend to radically change that person's idea of "the way things really are", e.g., birth, a threat to one's life, listening to Van Halen's early albums, cannibalism, the feeling of a Bigfoot. I'll never forget the first time I saw Ominum. Sore afflicted with the flux, I crawled out of my shelter of sticks and hides, and began to scurry downwind from the encampment. A strange sensation stopped me; my skin prickled, and I tripped over my feet. I stumbled to my hands and knees, desperately confused. I looked up, even as the stars faded before the coming light, and saw a figure staring back at me--it was myself! My ears rang; my throat tightened, yet its expression of utter equanimity had nothing about it of the fearful. Then it was there no more; I did not see it go. Later that day, when my neck was pierced through by the arrow, I thought, "Those guys are good!"
