"ELAY TO ELGIN"
Hey! My name is David Lear singer - songwriter for The Nob Hill Billys. Although I write and play other styles, this band is a vehicle for my Alt. Country, Americana, Roots Rockabilly and Western Folk material. I relocated from Los Angeles to Austin, well actually Elgin, the Sausage Capitol Of Texas, so you might say I went from "Elay to Elgin" to pay my Texas dues.
I have been very lucky to play with some great musicians both in Los Angeles and Austin. From friends Dave Wolfe (Miswest Monster) and hot retro burlesque dancer Cardinal Sin (Jorie), I met drummer James Fitzsimmons (Black Irish TX) and fiddler Mark Maughmer (Flatcar Rattlers) who have been backing me up ever since my arrival. Fellow Cali transplant Tom Pursell introduced me to awesome Bass Fiddler Bobby Daniel (Amy Cook, Chris Brecht, Ray Wylie Hubbard) who has infused his talent to the Nob Hill Billys.
Other supportive Austin musicians that have become friends is Diesel Kings bandleader Michael Shane Borden and singer-guitarist Xavier from Hotrod Hillbillies. Both extended their knowledge/assistance of "The Live Music Capitol of the World" without bringing in the musician competition factor like much of the players in LA. I'm not knocking it, because I recently met up with ultra cool LA come Austin Randy Weeks and it is refreshing to speak to another Angeleno transplant in this Texas environment. Austin TX is the place, no question.
I hope to record a new Nob Hill billys CD using more mixtures of hillbilly rock, alt. country, dust bowl folk, cowpunk, jump blues and western swing. Some Producers I have spoken to briefly about recording is James Laurance of Audiomoxie (Dag King, Amanda Heironimus) and caught up with Gurf Morlix for a brief discussion at The Oaks where he was performing, he is truly way talented and I would love an opportunity to work with him.
