Attended Newark’s Arts High School where I majored in Art and Music. I then went to Parsons School of Design where I majored in Illustration and Graphic Art• Performed my first major “gig†at the age of 15 for then Newark Mayor Sharpe James, at his 1996 election victory party at The Robert Treat Hotel. I later won first place male vocalist at The Sony Music Talent Showcase hosted by then Sony A&R, Ronald Grant. Shortly afterwards I was requested by Mr. Grant to become a member of a R&B group produced by industry musician Donald Parker for Parker Music Co. which resulted in my joining his corporate band ‘Brothers 2+2’, were I was hired to perform at various elite venues/ functions including weddings, business receptions, and college alumni conventions, and did so for 5 years.
• Performed solo for The Newark Bear’s first home game at their debut opening of The Newark Bears Stadium, accompanied by The Weequahic High School Gospel Choir. The performance was directed by well-known music instructor, Valerie Price, whose students include the Fugees’ Wyclef Jean and Pras Michael.
• Seeing my talent, Ms. Price invited me to perform for Wyclef at his annual ‘Wyclef Kids’ Foundation celebration in the East Hamptons, which led me to the opportunity of perform in the choir alongside many gifted individuals such as Whitney Houston, Destiny’s Child, and Stevie Wonder at Wyclef Jean’s historical Hip-Hop Concert at Carnegie Hall. Unforgettable!
• I was later introduced to Raandu Avion (R.I.P.), an exclusive photographer whose clients included Vibe, Right On, ONE WORLD, Sister To Sister, and BET. Mr. Avion later hired me as an assistant, where for 3 years I was involved in photo shoots featuring the biggest names in Hip-Hop and R&B, helping me to get my feet wet in the area of entertainment, its industry, and how it is ran behind the scenes.
• I then moved to New York, where I played at various nightclubs throughout the City, including Iguana, Ell Capenello, Decade, Soul Café, Pyramid, Groove, The Underground and The Five Spot. At the same time, I was hard at work on my demo which can be heard on www.myspace.com/orikl. While in motion I was fortunate to be involved in various productions and even had my own cable show at MNN studios for a year along with booking backup vocal jobs for various up and coming artists and their productions
• Presently, I have a completed demo, book my own venues for my material and am searching for the right opportunity/ people/places to help me further my artistic objectives. I have been in several off theatrical music productions, five of which I was/ am a lead such as James Thunder Early in “Dreamgirls†(6 month run), The Wiz in “The Wiz†(6 month run), Mustafa in “A Hip Hop Storyâ€, The Hustler in “The Road To Calvary†(presently), and just got off a small stint in the Vy Higginson production, “Sing Harlem Singâ€. I also am presently working as musical director/songwriter for the gospel play “Descent At The Rock†and also in motion for being a part of a 3 month run in the off Broadway play “Isn’t Misbehavin†for fall/winter 09. Plans for the near future include performing for the 09 ING New York Marathon, which I’ve been doing for the past 4 years and continuing supporting local charities involving urban youth and at risk teens.
