Marjie Parsons ART/MUSIC Bio-
I am
an artist and songwriter from scenic Eastern Iowa and I love
the magic of creating new things. I grew up surrounded and inspired by the art of
hometown painter, Grant Wood ("American Gothic"), one of my favorite artists. I
also grew up watching the Opry with my family, which inspired my songwriting.
You may listen to and download two of my songs from the following:
SnailWorx & SCARGO Productions after the first of the year! MTV downloads, SnailWorx.com , Rhapsody.com , MusicGremlin.com , Napster.com , EMusic.com , Itunes.com
(to download free Itunes player, then access "Music Store" through the program.)
I grew up in a country and rockabilly music environment surrounded by my
step-dad's band. My mom and brother ran lights and sound and sometimes
my siblings and I tagged along,as they opened for country acts around the region
such as Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Patty Loveless, Vince Gill, Reba, The Judds, among
others. Influenced by the music,I started writing poetry and songs at age 10
(literally) to the beat of my step-dad's drum while his band rehearsed.
My family used to travel to Nashville every year, which I really
grew to love and now happily call home. I feel very blessed that my love
of songwriting has enabled me to co-write, and record with some of our country's
FINEST and award-winning writers and musicians. I continue to learn FROM them!
After I moved to NYC I did a study abroad in former Czechoslovakia
learning about the Velvet Revolution, influencing my passion for the power of
creative thinking, music, and art. While I studied Philosophy and Art,
NYC was the perfect backdrop to learn, as I worked in theaters, including
Joseph Papp Public Theater, and the Delacorte Theater Shakespeare Festival in
Central Park, among others. It was a lot to take in and I loved it. I got to exhibit in
SOHO, and paint murals with some of my BEST friends, Evolving Image,
EvolvingImage.com , in NY, San Francisco, and Los Angeles areas. I feel that in NYC,
I really developed, as an artist, and nurtured the seeds that had always been.
When I moved to Los Angeles, I was fortunate to find community in Billy Block's
Western Beat
at Highland Grounds . Billy is awesome and always supportive and was
one of the first people to welcome me when I moved to Nashville.
Nick Strimple, choir director, will also always be someone who is an important
teacher of both music and interfaith participation for me. Singing with
Nick's choirs remains close to my heart. I joined them to sing at the Prague Castle,
Nuremberg, Germany with the Neuremberg Symphony (in Meistersingerhal,)
singing Leonard Bernstein's, Kaddish, which also aired on Radio Berlin,
Royce Hall at UCLA, Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church, and back to Terezin
Concentration Camp
in N.W. Bohemia which I had visited as a student years earlier,
for a project titled, Sounds of Healing, with choirs from the U.S., Canada, & Israel.
The meaning of that tour will ALWAYS stick with me. I also stayed active in the
Beverly Hills Theater Ensemble under the direction of "FUMI" (Catherine Cummings),
in productions such as You Can't Take It With You, The Weddin' Night, and the
Sunday Night Live sketch comedy shows. FUMI will ALWAYS be someone who has
encouraged and helped me to both put "me" aside, AND "find my voice"
and to use the creative process to "build a character".
I continue to work as an artist/graphic artist and digital retoucher in Nashville,
as I did in NY & L.A.while I create new music and art, and also grow
in all directions. I am also teaching art and I find that I really enjoy the variety.
I hope to use my talents to serve and share in many ways throughout my life,
and to be creative in all ways I am inspired. I hope you enjoy them.
With the unexpected always present in life, maybe our paths will cross.....
if they haven't already!! Or maybe they have already, and we just don't know it yet?*!
PEACE!!! :)

Some personal thoughts to share:
"I allow myself to be creative in whatever way possible,
with the grounding of my own morals and ethics. That kind of freedom is what keeps
me alive and whole. The world likes to compartmentalize us into categories, but I
believe in keeping all channels open to retain freedom to create & explore.
That freedom is what makes me, as an artist, truly alive. I never forgot what I
learned while studying in a post-Communist country which was just coming out of a
long period with creative restrictions, where many were even imprisoned for
certain expressions...that our ability to express ourselves is a gift. It was also a
GIFT, to understand
this meaning and value of our freedom to be creative.
To be creative is a spiritual GIFT, a gift we can share, which truly reflects the life
of the universe which is always creating, recreating, changing, and all of that
teaches us to let go and let things develop, and let go of ego which blocks creativity....
to create in the freedom of every moment, which is ALWAYS NEW. In that freedom
is when spontaneaity and creativity happens, and the craft is what directs it."

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Joni Mitchell, Loretta Lynn (my father came from a coal mining family in W.Virginia,
(and where I also lived when younger), and I am fascinated by the culture and experience.)
I loved Shel Silverstein for all of his wonderful creations, including his children's books, poetry,
illustrations, and songs... I wish I would have known him when he was around. (Although he was a friend of my
friend's family, and I've heard stories of Shel visiting their house and
literally bottling the air to take with him back to California.
This makes me want to have known him even more :) (haha!)
