Part "Where the fuck did these guys come from?!?", and part "Please don't piss off our sponsors!!", Project Mayhem took out the State's richest band competition: Next Big Thing 2008 with style and grace not seen since John Butler took it out ten years previously.

And words cannot express the extent to which they smelled a million times better than Fremantle's favourite millionaire. It's a telling prediction for the future.

In any case, this radness has been compounded this week with a big-arse show at the Hydey Backroom, and a great big fuck-off performance at Hyper Fest for the kids, alongside Shihad and shit.

Next weekend sees the launch of the much anticipated ...Go Gonzo CD, the so-called "difficult second EP" which is being released in grandiose style aboard the Paddle Steamer Decoy.

That's right, Project Mayhem have hired out the local paddle steamer, are putting $4000 on the bar, and are getting their contemporaries fucking annihilated. In usual style, it's been a self-funded DIY process. Needless to say, the members of Project Mayhem are sleep deprived.

But it doesn't end there. With two more CDs in the pipeline, as well as a video clip, spots at the WAMI festival and next year's Big Day Out already confirmed, the next six months are going to be a non-stop juggernaut.

No Rest For The Wicked indeed...

THE BAND SAYS:

Storming out of the Perth City Underground in May 2007 with their No Rest For The Wicked masterpiece EP, these four young troublemakers from the Boom Town have never looked back. Dispensing their demented “Gonzo Rock” gospel, the band mix punk rock’n’roll with a stoned groove and a furious determination that leaves lesser bands floundering—both on and off the stage.

Project Mayhem’s follow-up …Go Gonzo! is sure to turn a few heads when it is launched aboard the Paddle Steamer Decoy in September. Spearheaded by songs like “Boom Town Rocks”, “The Devil’s Advocate”, and “Party Town W.A.”; the five track EP is peppered with tall tales of life in the seemy underbelly of Western Australia. True to the “Gonzo” spirit they adopted along the way, Project Mayhem take you where the cameras don’t go, into the heart and soul of the world that surrounds them.

Manic, sometimes angry, yet strangely catchy vocals compliment a rock’n’roll attack; soulful lead guitar work over a barrage of bass fuzz and stoner percussive groove. This is Project Mayhem: a dynamic hybrid of individual influence and experience, one of those rare breeds where the group is greater than the sum of its parts; a frenzied cathartic stage show with a solid musical base. They say “there ain’t no party like a Mayhem party”—and once it’s seen, it has to be believed!

AND THE PRESS SAY:

Spokespersons of a geographically specific assembly of your people living in a boom town but still resigned to making their own fun, Project Mayhem prove that just because you want to get completely monged and your dialect is obscenely peppered doesn't mean you're a dumbass.
- X-Press Magazine, Feb ‘08

No Rest for the Wicked, simply put, makes a fucking fantastic accompaniment to every substance fueled hedonistic act you've ever partaken in.
- perthbands.com, Oct ‘07

Benny Mayhem's raw, husky tones hurtle the unwary listener between intelligent observations of the socially disorientating world they live in and perhaps helpful advice on life experiences lived. The guitar solos burst in between structured songs, leaving little room for wondering why you're still sitting, with the overall texture of fast paced savagery that burns from the seams of this CD, sure to lure listeners into the underground lair of Project Mayhem's life.
- perthsounds.com, Sept ‘07

Part of the reason for all this is that Benny Mayhem has range and an undertone of menace to his vocal that sets each song on its ear. You could listen to guitarist Hugh Drockstar for a week too - which isn't to take anything away from the engine room of Bangers on drums and Jesse Deviant on very fluid bass. His bassline carries "Cop Song (Sworn At. Spat At. Kicked & Bashed)" in a way the guitars never could if the bottom end wasn't nailed to the floor like valuable household goods at a kleptomaniac's garage sale.
- i94 Bar, Sept ‘07

[Project Mayhem's] songs are catchier than bird flu at a Taiwanese cock-fight.
- X-Press Magazine, 28 Feb '07

Project Mayhem's CD is the most fun you can have with your pants on, but if you enjoy it as much as I do, those pants will come RIGHT OFF! It's your comprehensive guide to rock and roll, if you don't dig it.. then I officially sanction your death. It's safe to say, if your ears aren't painted on... you'll love Project Mayhem. 4 3/4 out of 5.
- Laith Tyranny, Fear Of Comedy

In terms of rock music fuelled by a big punk attitude (think The Saints, The Ramones), Project Mayhem are the shit. Lead by Benny Mayhem, one of the most animated and charismatic frontmen you're likely to see around the traps, the boys impressed with their playing talents, their ability to write some fucking catchy tunes and their salute to the three essentials - beer, drugs and rock 'n' roll. I’m sure the event sponsors Drug Aware and Healthway were proud.
- Steph Edwardes, Rockus Online Magazine.

...Project Mayhem also have a large knowledge and love of Perth bands past and present as well, and it makes them part of a similar legacy. Understanding that simple songs should be catchy, Project Mayhem's take on pop is merely to rough it up, not to break its rules, which makes them a very effective band. Frontman Ben Watson seemed more nervous (or at least less energetic) than usual, but guitarist Hugh filled in the space by putting his whole body into his playing. There's no two ways about it; the guy takes on the role of guitar hero like a fish to water. If there was a category for 'songwriting' on the NBT judging sheets, then this band would have surely placed higher.
