LGBT Society

About the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender society

We are a group of like-minded students who come together to offer each other help and support, and also to discuss current events and issues within the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community.

The Society provides a Safe Space for students to just 'be', to make new friends, to talk about anything you want, to plan outings, to rally people for campaigns, and everything else you can think of.

The society is anything you want it to be. If yo want to go down the local pub to try your hand at karaoke, that's what will happen! If you want to meet people from other local LGBT societies, that's what will happen! If you just want the support and companionship of others, then that's what will happen!

It's a very laid back society. Attendance is not mandatory. We dont ask you for money.

If you are interested, send us an email, or look at our myspace/facebook page. See if there is someone you can connect with!

We meet every Thursday Evening at City campus, in a safe space that is just for our group, for that reason, you will need to contact a member of the group for room and time information, but rest assured that we will welcome any contact you make with us, and hold it with the strictest confidenciality.

Some members have recently said:

"The LGBT has helped me come to terms with my identity and offered support and frindship which has proven invaluable" Sarah (Chair 2006/07)

"I met my girlfriend of 2 years, now my fiance" Laz

"I met so many good friends through the Society." Gem

"I found a housemate!" Tony

"There are so many hotties, it unreal" Rose

"Finding such a great bunch of friends, friends that are different to those who I met through my course, friends who I see once a week or at other times through the week. For me this has been a great way to remain chilled and happy at Uni. Friends that will stay with me for a very longtime (I also found a housemate!)." Adam (Chair Semester 1 2007/08)

"Discovering the LGBT society was the best thing that's happened to me, it's boosted my confidence and helped me come to terms with my sexuality. I've made many friends that will stick with me for life, and it's been the best experience at uni so far (appart from my A16 *gloats* :-).)" Jack (Chair 2008/09)

Frequently Asked Questions:

I'm not "out", do I still have to provide personal information?

We are recognised by the NUS and WLV Student Union as a liberation society, therefore we do not have to keep a list of members, nore do we have to take any other personal details from any member. Any information you provide is optional, but will be kept confidencial at your request.

Why doesn't the society publish the room number and times of the meetings?

Due to the nature of our society, we have to protect the location of the meetings as best as we can. We hold our meetings in a safe space, so that our members are free to voice their true feelings and speak freely without the worry that details will start to fly across the campus, about their personal life styles. If you send the group an email, message us on myspace, message the chair on the facebook group, or phone us, we will be happy to give you details of the meeting location and timeslot.

Do I have to pay?

Nope. Our society is free for any student, staff or faculty member to join.

I'm unsure about my sexuality or I'm curious, can I still join?

Yes, we are here to help you come to terms with your sexuality, be it gay, lesbian, Bi-sexual or straight!.
