About Me

The year was 1992. Melanie was at the tender age of five and had just urinated all over her school dress and the classroom floor.
It all began on one hot, sunny, primary school lunchtime (aka. big play). After a vigorous game of two-square, Melanie was parched and proceeded to (break a school rule) by going indoors during lunchtime to fetch her orange juice out of her locker (plastic tub).
It was of course Melanie's luck that at this time disaster struck, as she spilt her orange juice in her tub and all over it's contents. Hurriedly she began mopping up the mess with all she could find, tissues from the teachers desk, paper towels, her school jumper- all the while becoming more and more anxious she would get caught by her grade one teacher, Mrs. Hughes. (Who always smelt of cigarettes and coffee, and had yellow teeth)
Suddenly Melanie realized she needed to use the toilet, but 'no' she said defiantly 'I must clean the mess first'. (She was of course alone in the room and in fact talking to herself - a bit weird)
The orange juice was more stubborn than first expected and Melanie's bladder was proving more and more persistent. 'NO' she said defying it all. Defying her teacher, defying the stubborn orange juice, defying her bladd... And then it happened.
Trickling down her leg, into her school socks and all over the classroom floor. All at once Melanie felt a sense of pure relief and utter embarrassment. At this point the orange juice didn't seem like such a huge problem.
Conveniently Melanie's tub was placed in rather close proximity to the reading corner; where beanbags, chairs and cushions were found in abundance.
Well you can put two and two together and conclude that Melanie did what any self-respecting six-year-old girl who'd just made a huge damp patch on the carpet would do. Re-arrange the reading corner.
This moment sums up most of Melanie's life and future endeavours. Not the weeing part, so much, as the resourcefulness and quick thinking in tricky (trickling) situations.
It also explains her adulthood afflictions with orange juice and plastic tubs in general.
