DJ/producer Alonzo Savoy is based in San Diego, Ca., and has been in the dance music “trenches” for the past 12 years. Alonzo’s education in the underground began at raves. “I used to dance to Mark Farina, Stacy Pullen, Doc, Derrick Carter, and a lot of other groovin’ DJ’s who played on the west coast rave scene,” says Alonzo.Whether while dancing all night at raves or collecting a piece of vinyl from a favorite producer, Alonzo’s love of the underground dance culture was growing, laying a foundation for his artistic expression in years to come. Alonzo would get his first break while DJ’ing at the now defunct Juke Joint in San Diego, where he met friend and industry contact, Lamont Moerhaus. Later, they would start a major residency called Groundwerk, creating the opportunity to play with some of the best DJ’s and producers in the world. Alonzo has played alongside Demarkus Lewis, JT Donaldson, Andy Caldwell, Charles Spencer, Jamie Thinnes, Lamont Moerhaus, Halo, Hector Morales, Lance Desardi, and many others.This life experience influenced him in his quest for understanding the music and eventually gave him the tools to create it. “Groundwerk was so influential for me,” Alonzo recalls. “I was totally immersed in the music and found myself visualizing how these tracks were arranged and written. The grooves in the vinyl were like maps, guiding you toward the journey the track would take you on. I would focus on the grooves in the vinyl and equate that to the emotions I saw reflected on the dance floor. From that point, I made a decision to jump in with both feet. I started experimenting with different sequencing platforms and became immersed in recording. I’m kind of a hermit, so being alone in a dark room with a glass of wine and making music is a meditative experience for me.”When you ask Mr. Savoy why he creates music, he gives a straightforward answer. “It’s an attempt to express emotions through the sense of sound, so that in hearing the music, you will open to the feelings within your soul. The mission from the beginning is to FEEL”.It’s evident from listening to Alonzo’s music that he has emotion in mind when creating these tracks. A proper underground journey with strong elements of jazz, tech and percussion is a great way to explain his music. “I love both the electronic and organic and try to create a fusion of both in my tracks. My style is a direct representation of my life experiences”.Passion, focus, and determination are good ways to explain why Alonzo is seen as the next generation of producers making their mark. Mr. Savoy’s talent is heard and felt through productions on Native Soul Recordings, Revival Recordings, and Bridge Music. Alonzo has plans of dropping more hot tunes in the years to come.
