In South Gate California 1981 the music scene was dominated by heavy metal hippies and disco/new wave freaks. There were however a small group of us that needed a change. Out of this group of south gate punks a band named Corpus Delecti was born. RJ Vasquez and I (Jim lurch Graffe) met through mutual friends, possibly at South Gate High School but probably not because neither of us attended much. RJ and I had a both liked punk music and decided we needed to start a band. I got a JC Penney SG copy bass and a cheap amp and RJ some how obtained a PA system. We recruited a local party buddy Joe Pacheco to play drums and began making noise in RJs garage. While we continued playing every chance we got we also attended every LA punk show we could. Luckily One night RJ went to the Brave Dogs (A bar behind the Atomic Café in downtown LA) and met a drunken door man originally from Cudahy named John Orloff (R.I.P.) John said he could play guitar so RJ invited him to play with us. The OG lineup of Vasquez, Orloff, Graffe, Pacheco, lasted a few months until I got booted out of South Gate High And had to go to Huntington Park High School there I met a greaser looking new york punk named Ceasar Fernandez.. Ceasar said he could play the skins so I invited him to come practice with us .Fernandez replaced Pacheco and our line up was set, But we still had no name. Orloff was at home bored one night watching Quincy MD, the tv show about the coroners office. There he came up with the name Corpus Delecti We spelled delecti wrong it should be delicti. We didnt know or care. After a few months of drunken practices, we began playing shows and parties all over southern California . We played with the likes of Circle One, the Hypnotics, resistence ,Shattered Faith ,The Mentors and thousands more .we also played some memorable lunch time shows at South Gate and La Habra high schools and the Montebello high school graduation party. We were not the typical punk/hardcore band of the time we had a little different sound. Im not sure why. I left the band in 1984 and was replaced by Mike Iduarte of Circle One fame. Corpus went on to play many more shows and put out a 12 EP on mystic records and an independent 7" both with more of a goth style. Corpus Delecti finally died around 1985. RJ went on to form Faith Assembly (which I briefly played bass in in 1987) and why?things burn RJ also owns T.O.N records Orloff went on to become Johnny Anus of Anus the Menace. John died an untimely death about 5 years ago. Graffe went on to play in various LA punk bands 647(f) , Bleach Black and the Screwballs. Etc. Fernandez returned to his native Puerto rico and became a chicken farmer.Corpus Delecti 2006 features the early punk style of the band . Unfortunatly John passed away and Ceasar cannot leave the chickens unattended So it will just Be RJ and I with a very capable supporting cast. Well see you in a backyard or a dive bar soon. LURCH S.G.P.
