About Me
My journey began in Whiteslanding,Queens, Long Island, New York; on June 3, 1910. I was an only child, I believe ma and pa would concur. Life has always been a great challenge to me and I love approaching life with exuberant energy and wit.I was always ambitious for as long as I could remember. My career began while I was a young teenager when I became a fashion model. I joined the Ziegfield Follies in 1924 and traveled around gaining many valuable experiences along the way. During this time I dabbled in stage and theatre my first appearance was in "The Unconquerable Male."
At this stage of my life I met the Broadway writer Edgar James to which I only had a brief marriage and we departed ways due to our careers and interests going in separate directions. I was so young......In 1929, I found myself in Hollywood. The magnetic appeal pulled me all the way from New York. At this time I may have been naive, but I believed in all the build up. I have had some professional experience by now and I figured what better way to exploit my talents. I then signed a contract with the Hal Roach Studios. Here I remained a bit player, mainly providing attractive scenery. But ultimately here is where I learned about the mechanics of slapstick comedy as it existed in the raw.
Next, I became apart of the Goldwyn Girls, also synonymous with the Ziegfield Girls. The girls were of the same lot, we were chorus girls, mind you. Many stars who share this experience include: Marion Davies, Louise Brooks, Joan Blondell, and Lucille Ball however not limited to these lovely ladies...1932 indeed is a very notable year, for I met my second husband Charles Spencer Chaplin. Charles bought my film contract from the Roach Studios. I was on to bigger and better things. I was finally going to develop my skills in acting, for I received the role of the gamin opposite the tramp in "Modern Times." Our relationship was complex for we had one of a cinematic nature and also a intimate/romantic nature as well. However, I would not trade our union for the world. I learned so much while I was with him. We traveled abroad, he exposed me to exotic places with rich cultures something that I will always share with him. Charles was a modest man not interested in putting his wealth on display. He used his wealth and access to resources to meet intriguing individuals and most importantly gain new and exciting experiences. A favorite of ours was visiting a place near to our home in Beverly Hills, Catalina Island! Oh what a venturous little excursion! The style and design of the island is like a private oasis! We would put on our nautical apparel and forget about the troubles and stresses of Hollywood...What of the controversy surrounding the Chaplin-Goddard union? We took vows in a ceremony in China in 1936. Was it legal, you decide? For does it even matter in the long run? The point is we lived together, built a life around one another, while also enjoying our own lives individually. We resolved this union amicably and remained friends...To return to my professional career, after "Modern Times" I found myself staring in many films there after. For Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Paramount Pictures. I tried to choose my roles carefully, but you are bound to run into some duds sometimes, right? My notable alliances include teaming with Bob Hope, Cecil B. Demille, Ray Milland, Fred Mac Murray, and Burgess Meredith...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MYKmWM7tyc.. width="425" height="350" ..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z4ptCXYZO4.. width="425" height="350" ..
