About Me

Hi! I'm Lisa Crum and I'm a freelance writer and Christian songwriter. On this site you'll get a sampling of some of the music (just simple recordings...until I can get access to a studio) that God has blessed me to write. I sincerely hope that these songs uplift and inspire you. NOTE: Artists or producers, if you are interested in recording any of my songs listed on MySpace or on Soundclick, please feel free to give me a shout!Growing up, I had an ear for music at a very early age, banging out melodies on a kiddie piano when I was just a toddler. Mom and Dad bought a real piano when I was seven, so at that point I began seriously trying to learn to play. No lessons...Mom played by ear, and I just picked it up from her and anyone else I could sit and watch. I began taking sax lessons in elementary school. Although reading music has never been my strong-point, I did well enough to rate well in county and all-area competitions back in school...BUT...even now I feel a little rebellious when I'm forced to read and play from a piece of sheet music! Anyway, after I graduated high school, I played the sax for a couple of years in a local gospel group. Career, marriage, and close connection to a home church have tamed down my itch to travel and play music, but I've continued to write. Music gets in your blood. I don't think you ever stop wanting to do more.Currently, I am a praise band musician and singer in my local church, playing piano, organ and sax. In recent years I've begun to write music on a serious level, and my intent in sharing a few items here on My Space is to get my music into the hands of artists who can record these songs with real finesse. Although it would be nice to actually become a recording artist, my primary interest and passion is just to write for other artists--an honest assessment of myself, I feel I'm more songwriter than singer, even though I love to do both! It's my hope that the music I've written will be a blessing to others, and that it will bring glory to God. I just want it to reach and touch as many people as possible. Of all the things we do and accomplish in life, what we do for Him is what truly lasts. Find your destiny in Him...it's the one thing we get to "take with us" when we're gone. For those of you who are visitors and friends to my page, I pray that you will have a rich relationship with Jesus Christ. Life's short, friends, let's make it to heaven together.Love to you and yours...

Influences: All kinds! I suppose we are a sum of our experiences, and for me it's impossible not to be a conglomerate of the sounds I grew up listening to. My absolute favorite artist of all time is Michael McDonald, but I very much like the stylings of Mercy Me, Ray Charles, Third Day, Alison Krauss, Luther Vandross, Ambrosia, John Elefante, Patti LaBelle, Aretha, CeCe Winans, Faith Hill, Anita Baker, Helen Baylor...I can appreciate just about any type of music performed well. As far as my influences, I guess I've soaked up a little of it all...gospel, contemporary christian, soul, blues, jazz, country, pop, classic r&b, and even a little southern rock. Growing up in an Appalachian environment, I hear even a little tinge of bluegrass in my voice at times. Music's very diverse, and it's God's gift to us--meant to be beautiful, meant to glorify the Creator. I can't help but believe that even He likes variety in sounds, because He's given so many talented people such different styles. I don't think I've honestly heard a single style of music that didn't have its own beauty, when lyrics are pure and heal rather than hurt. Basically, I love to hear someone who sings from the heart, and to me that's even more important than being the best vocalist. A vocalist can impress you, but a singer can MOVE you. Instrumentally, being a sax player, I love to hear Kenny G, Sam Levine, Dave Sanborn, Kirk Whalum, and Grover Washington Jr. I would say that I try to incorporate the sounds I love with the positive lyrics I write, but these songs seem to have "a mind of their own!" Can't seem to predict how the next one will turn out, except that it'll be totally opposite what I would have planned! It never ceases to amaze me how the whole process works. I'm very grateful and don't take it for granted; every song could be the last that I ever "hear" and put down on paper. I tend to get the lyrics and the music at the same time (which I understand is a little out of the ordinary), but that's the way it almost always happens for me. I'll be awakened out of sleep sometimes with a song, or get an idea in the line at the grocery store, or especially while driving or riding the motorcycle. I've learned to keep a pad of paper and a pen within reach no matter where I am, because these things just come from out of nowhere.
Sounds Like: For better or for worse, I sound like me!
