I could try to be cute or funny with this. Unfortunately, I don't do either of those things very well, especially on purpose. So expository it is.
I live in Seattle. I'm left-handed. I'm told I'm a man of many words. I won't dispute that. I'm told I'm a nerd. I won't dispute that either. I practice law. I work with lots of creative folks (e.g., musicians, visual artists, graphic designers, bars, clubs, etc). I sometimes teach media students about the law. I've also been known to dabble in Filemaker Pro. I am a lover of live music. If you're in Seattle and go to rock shows, I bet you have probably seen me out at a show over the years.
I also write songs. Then I play the guitar and sing them. For some reason, I play the guitar right-handed. I consider that a blessing. It makes browsing in music stores more rewarding: so many more guitars to put in weird tunings and play Nick Drake songs on. I love browsing in music stores.
Along with my buddy John Ramberg, I co-hosted the Tuesday songwriter night at the Sunset Tavern for most of its 5 year run. We had some good times. Sorry if you missed them. J-Ram is one hell of a songwriter. His new band, the Tripwires, kills. See them live whenever you can. You will not regret it. Their new album, "Makes You Look Around," kills too. Buy it here . If you believe good music has the power to make your life better, getting this record will be one of the better things you do for yourself this coming year.
From time to time, I record my own songs too. I made a separate band profile and posted a few of them there. The url is as follows: www.myspace.com/jakelonmusic . If you're bored, have a listen.
Besides music, I like cooking and eating food. Along with some friends, I once made a Turducken. The proof is here and here . It was quite an experience. I guess it says something that it's almost three years later and we haven't repeated it.
I've deep fried a turkey too. That was also quite an experience. If you've never seen 300 degree hot oil foam up like a vinegar and baking soda volcano, I suggest you try it. For best results, use a partially frozen Turkey and do it on a cold, rainy, Seattle Sunday in the middle of winter. At least the hush puppies we fried up after the turkey turned out well.
But I digress. For these experiences were really just minor detours from my decade-long obsession: barbecue. Whether it be 10 lbs or 50, I do like smoking the large food.
I also like eating it. In the picture to the left, I'm waiting to eat someone else's barbecue. Eating someone else's good barbecue is one of the few things that can be more fun than making your own barbecue. Good conversation, good sex, and good whiskey are a few of the other things. So is good music.
In my pictures section, there's a picture of some barbecue. I was waiting for that exact barbecue in the picture to the left. Just so there's no ambiguity, that barbecue was good. If you are ever in Austin, Texas, I suggest you try Poke Joe's. That's where I was waiting. It's one of the better spots to get good barbecue in the city of Austin proper. Dispute me if you want, but I've tried a lot of places down there over the years. So I know what I know. Of course, it's okay for you to know what you know too, unless you support the current administration. Then I've got a bone to pick with you.
