One day in March of 1986, Charlie and I are in the Dedham Mall Record town checking out their minimal selection of rap tapes when we see two other young white kids looking at the same section. Charlie starts talking with them, and we find out that Shawn Rossi of Roslindale and Eddie Cunningham of Hyde Park love rap as much as we do. We also discover that they listen to the same local rap show we do, "Lecco's Lemma" on MIT's WMBR 88.1 FM. Magnus Johnstone, the DJ of the show, is an active promoter of local rap talent and is the first in Boston to allow the city's kids to come into the studio and let their songs be heard over the radio. Live rap on the show is done with a beat boxer, someone who makes beats with his mouth while the others rap. The main acts are The RSO, Disco P & The Fresh MC, Body Rock, The Tuff Crew, The FTI and The RCC. Considering we've all been listening religiously to the broadcasts every week (as well as calling to harass Magnus with requests and dedications), Charlie figures it can't be that hard and says, "Hey, why don't we do that?" So Charlie's mother drives us four 11-to-13-year-old white kids down to MIT, where we do a live interview and play "Cuttin' Time", using the (we think so, anyway) clever name White Magic. No one really notices us, mostly because of an argument in the studio between Emo E and Fantasy. At one point, these two huge men are actually gesturing at each other over our heads while we're straining to hear Magnus through the headphones. Anyway, not content to leave bad enough alone, we return next week and perform a live rap. To be quite blunt, it sucks: Charlie beatboxes instead of Shawn (who is much better at beatboxing), because Shawn wants to rap. I'm the only one who has anything written, a rearrangement of my "DoubleJam Rap", leaving Shawn and Eddie to fumble through their freestyles. But the studio audience (consisting of Body Rock and some of The RCC) is pleasantly surprised by these little white kids rapping and gives us loud (if somewhat amused) support. As laughable as it is, the impact is felt, because what has always been a teenage, city, black thing is for five minutes a preadolescence, suburban, white thing. It points the way for raps reach into white consciousness and opens the door for groups like The White Boys.PS - I still have (somewhere, I'll have to look) the recording of us beatboxing and rapping in the doorway of the Dedham Mall that day. Ancient history, huh?
