KARMABLUE è un progetto musicale nato concettualmente alla metà degli anni '90, a Roma, dalla collaborazione tra il compositore, autore e chitarrista Giacomo Caruso, già fondatore degli STILL-LIFE, gruppo attivo negli anni ’80, il soprano Cristina Cappellini, il “performer†e sperimentatore vocale David Barittoni. Ad essi si uniscono Antonio Leoni e Sergio De Vito, del gruppo EPSILON INDI, rispettivamente al basso e al pianoforte, Massimo Nanni al basso, il musicista africano Bassidou Compaore alle percussioni e alla voce etnica, Carlo Spagnoli alla batteria, Francesco Baldi al violino e tastiere. Questo collettivo musicale si è dedicato essenzialmente alla composizione e registrazione di brani musicali con la supervisione e produzione artistica di Giacomo De Caterini. Da tali registrazioni viene tratto un CD, intitolato ERRATICO ESTATICO, pubblicato nel 2002 da TOAST Records di Torino. I brani di ERRATICO ESTATICO mescolano rock e influenze etniche, sonorità elettriche e "bel canto" della tradizione melodica italiana, e contengono "in nuce" le linee guida dell’evoluzione musicale del gruppo. Nel marzo del 1999 Giacomo Caruso avvia una collaborazione con il chitarrista/bassista Paolo Spetia, sodalizio creativo che fornisce al progetto nuovi stimoli e idee per approfondire la ricerca musicale. Da tale collaborazione nascono una manciata di brani che formano le basi per i nuovi Karmablue. Dopo una prima apparizione al Circolo degli Artisti di Roma nel settembre 2002, i Karmablue partecipano alla Festa-Concerto di presentazione di Audiocoop Lazio, associazione di cui fanno parte (Alpheus di Roma, 15 dicembre 2002). A febbraio 2003 un banale incidente occorso a Giacomo Caruso e Paolo Spetia blocca l’attività del gruppo per circa 2 mesi. Nel frattempo un loro brano è scelto come bonus track nel CD Yatra, una compilation contro lo sfruttamento del lavoro minorile nel mondo, curata dall’organizzazione internazionale Mani Tese, appoggiata da MEI & AudioCoop, edita da Toast Records, un'opera unica in distribuzione nei negozi del Commercio Equo e Solidale, nella quale appaiono insieme ad artisti come Jovanotti, Daniele Sepe, Nomadi, Inti Illimani. A maggio 2003, di nuovo all’Alpheus di Roma, i Karmablue presentano ufficialmente in uno showcase il loro CD e la compilation di Mani Tese. Nel settembre 2004 inizia la collaborazione con il regista teatrale Vania Castelfranchi e la scrittrice Gloria Imparato, per la messa in scena di una performance di Teatro-Musica, dal titolo INSILENZIO, basata su brani del loro primo lavoro, con parti recitate e letture. Lo spettacolo viene portato in scena la prima volta nel giugno 2005 e, successivamente, durante tutta la prima metà del 2006. A novembre 2006, in occasione del Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti di Faenza, presentano il loro secondo CD, intitolato ACQUADANZE, pubblicato attraverso il loro marchio ATMAN Records. Attualmente i KARMABLUE sono un gruppo di musicisti professionisti e amatoriali, con formazione “apertaâ€, un gruppo “a geometria variabileâ€, di due o dieci persone, che si adatta alle circostanze, che si contrae per espandersi, che filtra le proprie crisi interiori per aumentare l’espressività , che non teme di incrociare il flusso creativo con performers, scrittori, teatranti, giocolieri... con la lucente ostinazione di chi persegue l’unico obiettivo di “fare arte†in musica emozionando ed emozionandosi, di trasmettere energia suonando ovunque se ne presenti l’opportunità , piccoli teatri, mostre di quadri, librerie, negozi, bar, dando vita a performances di taglio molto teatrale. La poetica di Giacomo Caruso, autore dei testi, si esprime attraverso liriche introspettive ed intimiste, che esplorano i grandi temi della ricerca umana: il viaggio, l’amore, la guerra, la morte. La musica del gruppo spazia con grande libertà attraverso diverse matrici musicali, tra ricerca e improvvisazione, atmosfere elettriche e psichedelia, influenze etniche e blues, con un uso particolare della voce, che a tratti diventa strumento.

KARMABLUE is a musical project born as a concept in the mid 90's, from the collaboration between the author, composer and guitarist Giacomo Caruso, founder of STILL-LIFE, band of '80, the soprano Cristina Cappellini, the performer and experimental vocalist David Barittoni.
Other musicians have collaborated with the original nucleus: Antonio Leoni (bass) and Sergio De Vito (piano) of the EPSILON INDI band, Massimo Nanni (bass), the african musician Bassidou Compaore (percussion and ethnical voice), Carlo Spagnoli (drums), Francesco Baldi (violin and keyboards) and Giacomo De Caterini for the supervision and artistic production.
This musical group has dedicated itself essentially to the composition and recording of various tracks, culminating in the production of their first CD, called ERRATICO ESTATICO, published in 2002 by TOAST Records, an independent label of Turin (Italy). The tracks contain "in nuce" all the features of the current KARMABLUE sound, mixing rock and ethnic influences, electric sounds and Italian traditional melodic "bel canto".
In March of 1999, the meeting between Giacomo Caruso and the guitar and bass player Paolo Spetia provided new stimulation and ideas to the project, to deepen the musical research, concretising in a stable creative accord.
This collaboration generate a handful of songs, that will drive the group to the future. In 2002, between September and December, KARMABLUE perform in Rome at Circolo degli Artisti and Alpheus, in a concert organised by Audiocoop Lazio, a musical association of which they are part. In February of 2003, a banal accident stop the musical activity of the group for some months.
During this time, a song from their first CD is selected as bonus track in a CD compilation, entitled Yatra, edited by the international organization Mani Tese against exploitation of juvenile work in the world, and published by the independent label TOAST Records, by cooperation with Audiocoop and M.E.I..
In May of 2003, at Alpheus in Rome again, KARMABLUE show their first CD and the compilation for Mani Tese. In September of 2004, they released a performance, entitled INSILENZIO, based on their first work, with music, recitative and acting, by collaboration with the producer Vania Castelfranchi and the woman writer Gloria Imparato.
This performance is staged for the first time in June of 2005, and, later on, during all the first half of year 2006. In November of 2006, KARMABLUE show their second CD, entitled ACQUADANZE, released by their own label ATMAN Records, at Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti in Faenza.
KARMABLUE actually are an "open" group, from two to ten musicians, adapting theirselves to circumstances, contracting to spread, crossing the musical creativity with performers, writers, actors, jugglers... with shining stubbornness of pursuing the unique aim of "making art" with music, to communicate energy and emotions, playing everywhere the opportunity presents itself, preferring unusual venues such as bars, libraries, shops, paint galleries or small theatres, giving life to performances and small happenings that create resonance and expectation.
The introspective and intimist lyrics of Giacomo Caruso explore the great themes of human search: journey, love, war, death. Their music is characterised by the extreme freedom in composition, continually oriented towards new ideas, a result of improvisation, with electric atmospheres, psychedelic echoes, by ethnic, blues and jazz influences and by a particular use of the voice.
