MR. WENDAL
MR. WENDAL'S BIO -
I was born and raised in Detroit. Music was an important part in my life. Both my father and brother were bass singers with various local groups, including gospel. I began playing the trumpet at around thirteen years of age, and joined a school band. I believe I picked up the bass when I was about thirteen/fourteen. I have been influenced by the late great James Jamerson, one of the greatest bass players of all time. When I was a young 19 year old kid, I auditioned for the late David Ruffin, during the time of his "Walk Away From Love.†Ruffin hired me on the spot, and within that week, we appeared in Toronto, Canada. Our second show was the Apollo. Playing on songs which bass lines had been recorded by Jamerson, was an experience I had never dreamed. Can you imagine how this 19 year old felt? It was pure joy. I’ve had the best music instructers, one being Marcus Belgrave. I’ve played with various jazz, blues, soul, and R&B artist over the years. From Belita Woods to the funky Brides of Funkenstine; from jazz musicians Wendell Harrison and Teddy Harris to blues singer Little Johnny Taylor. I could go on and on. Currently, and for the past 15 years, I am the bassist for the Dramatics.
